We recently connected with A.Abyla Lloyd and have shared our conversation below.
Hi A.Abyla, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
My purpose in life will never be completely fulfilled for there will always be a need to advocate for mental wellness. As a mother of an autistic teen, I have also had my childhood challenges in learning development and speech impairment. Where my life struggles from grade 1 through 4 went through thorough and intensive occupational therapy and speech therapy only to advance to the honor roll and receive numerous academic accolades. I grew up watching domestic struggles in the household which led my mother to move along with me and my brothers to live with with our maternal grandparents. She raised her three children and later had another child without a husband wasn’t easy. However, we had two loving grandparents who assisted in raising us in their home leading us to be raised in a safe environment. My mother was a respected servant of the community as a lead usher for a time at our church. This role she had has instilled leadership roles without ourselves and our communities. My eldest brother grew to become a gospel recording artist and entrepreneur, I became a member of a coed leadership and service fraternity while in college, and ran for homecoming queen while attending as a student at my alma mater Northern Illinois University. My two youngest brothers were active members of student organizations and athletics while in high school ultimately becoming admired individuals in the community. Although we each become agents of change in the community we each had life struggles and hurdles that tested our mental health, some more than others.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities about myself as an artist, entrepreneur, and business professional came to my attention while pursuing my master’s degree in Entertainment Business at Full Sail University, I earned a course director award in entertainment finance, artist and product management, and media and publishing distribution. Although I earned my masters in 2011, I now take greater pride in earning these accolades and respect the administrators who honored me for each of these derivatives. They truly represent my specialty in growth strategies, brand management, and community affairs.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My challenges came from abuse that I kept hidden since childhood to recently discovered I was adopted as a young child into the family I was raised and lived with for over 40 years. I have used creative works for years keeping my hidden talent in writing for theater and literary work silent until three years ago after becoming a late discovering adoptee, it was time to come out of hiding and make my voice active although some ask to keep my hidden pain to myself. Many people are wearing a false face of happiness but are walking with hard hearts. My writings have been healing moments that I share with my audience and thus also influenced me to discover my stage name A.Abyla Lloyd, although my legal name is LaTonya Patterson. This is my brief tale of the trenches. Unapologetically IAMME, beautifully me.
