We were lucky to catch up with A.D. Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
A.D., so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
I’ve always been an optimistic person. I believe that a big part of having that mindset comes from having the belief that most people will reciprocate positive energy when given the opportunity. I carry that positivity with all of my initial interactions with people, as well as my approach to achieving my personal goals that I set out. And vice versa, I believe that if you have a negative outlook all the time, then you will retrieve negative results.
On the flipside, another part of having that mindset probably comes from having a strong urge of actually wanting to see more positivity in the world, and not wanting to be like everybody else. So in essence, putting out the type of energy you want to see. My father always taught me to be my own man, and everytime someone comes up to me to tell me that I’m different and that they can see God’s presence in me, I know that it’s my purpose to be that beacon of God’s positivity in somebody else’s life other than my own.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As an Actor and Director in the DFW, I couldn’t be more excited for what’s on the horizon for our industry in this area. There are more and more opportunities for professional work that seem to be popping up every year. That’s like magic to my ears as an Actor, because I’m always looking for the next challenging role, with a story that will hopefully resonate with someone. And with an influx of productions thats seemingly on the rise, hopefully that spells out multiple opportunities for all areas of filmmaking.
I’m currently preparing to shoot 4 upcoming films chronologically this year, and I couldn’t be more excited to bring these characters to life. I’m sure I’ll be back directing at some point later this year as well. I’m always thankful to be blessed with opportunities to put my talents to use and work with other great, talented people.
One of the projects that I’ve directed has just been released recently, titled
“The Creep”. Then later this year, I’m expecting a few more to be released: “Promiscuously Toxic”, “Kingsmen”, “The Swerve Way”, and “Ten Toes Down”.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 qualities that I felt I needed to display the most on my journey were: to have a solid work ethic, to be confident in myself and my abilities, and to be purposeful with my goals. It’s best to keep in mind that your work ethic can make or break your trajectory. The work works, so just trust the process. And the more work you put in, the more confident you will become. However, you should always keep in mind of what direction you want to take your career to. The sooner you know that, the sooner you can start saying “no” to everyone and everything that doesn’t align with your purpose as a professional.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I’d say that I believe I’ve grown tremendously as a Director over this past year. Within that time span, I’ve directed 3 feature films, 1 short film, and assisted with another feature film. While working on these films, I’ve learned so many different techniques to use that helped expand my vision even more, thus helping me grow with each production. I call that “on the job training”. But it’s par for the course for me, since I’m always looking to improve with each project, as cliché as that sounds.
One area in particular is Team Building, knowing the right strengths and weaknesses to pair with to achieve very specific goals and objectives. To add to that, being able to communicate those specifications effectively is a personal preference of mine. The way I treat my team members, or potential team members, is very important to me. I’d do anything I can to ensure we have a high morale on set; high morale equates to spreading positive energy, and positive energy leads to fun and enjoyable work days.
