Meet A.J. Dunlap

We were lucky to catch up with A.J. Dunlap recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi A.J., we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I most definitely got any confidence or self-esteem from my mom. She raised us to believe we are capable of anything. From rewiring lighting to academic achievements to following our passions. She never once told us there was a ceiling of any kind, and for that I am so thankful!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I love making moms feel special. Don’t get me wrong, dads are amazing in their own right, my own husband is one of the most involved and helpful father’s I know, but he’s still not a mom. We all know there’s just something about mom. She does so much and gets so little evidence of that in the family memories. She deserves to be a part of the memories too, and have evidence of it! That’s my goal for every family or newborn session: for moms to walk away feeling special and included, because they deserve it.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three areas that were most impactful in my photography journey were:

1. Realizing there’s always more to learn. From books, webinars, online guides, and in person workshops. There’s always something to learn.
2. Doing the boring things. Keeping up with my book keeping, doing the tedious website work, creating systems to keep my business flowing smoothly. It’s not as fun as taking photos of all my beautiful clients, but it is what keeps my business running.
3. Connections. Building relationships with my clients and other professionals has made all the difference!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I most definitely have some dream sessions in my head that I would love to collaborate with other creatives! Specifically I have visions of maternity sessions in old world architecture with an elaborate gown, styled hair, and lots of florals.
