Meet A.m. Wright

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful A.m. Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with A.M. below.

Hi A.M. , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I lost my mom in my early twenties and quickly realized I had no idea who I was–that I’d been living my life for other people for far too long. Losing her was the reminder I needed that life is short and can be over in an instant. I decided to focus on reminding myself of who I am and what I enjoy, other’s opinions be damned. I rediscovered my love for reading, which reignited my passion for writing which had been long since dormant. I’ve learned that my purpose is to create stories, use words to relate to others, and give them a place to escape when they need it most.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Growing up, my dad was a chef and musician, and my mom loved to write, so I was always surrounded by creativity. I wrote many “books” that never saw the light of day and dabbled in any instrument I could get my hands on at school. While I still love music, which you’ll likely pick up on in my writing, my passion for storytelling grew stronger.

In my first year of writing again, I became a published author. My short story, What Lies Beneath the Ice, is a fantasy short story perfect for the winter months. The story follows Aerin, a twenty-something who lost her mom, much like myself, and is looking for her way through life. When she falls through an icy pond, she ends up in an unfamiliar realm, forced to travel alongside a broody elf. It’s bite-sized and full of adventure, lessons, and love. The story is available on Kindle or in the Azala Press Winter’s Enchantment Anthology!

I’m also over the moon to share that my first full fantasy manuscript is off to my editor in January 2025. My entire heart is in this book, and I’m excited yet terrified to share it with the world next year. Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Stop worrying about what others think and just go for it. I used to be so afraid of judgment and held myself back for years, only to look back and realize I didn’t like who I’d become. One day I woke and wanted to write and post about it, so I did, and two years later I haven’t looked back. In fact, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and so grateful I stopped letting others get to me.

2. Lean on your resources. I’m a meticulous planner, so when I decided to take writing seriously again, I spent a few months researching story structure, character arcs, and worldbuilding. I found a group of other writers and authors who could answer any of my newbie questions. I found every resource I could.

3. Take every opportunity that comes your way. No matter if you’re scared or don’t feel good enough, push through it. Say yes, put yourself out there, and remember that you’re worthy and deserve to take up space. Don’t make yourself small, don’t diminish your accomplishments, and don’t hold yourself back. A world of opportunities awaits you.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Time is my worst enemy right now between work, family, writing, and everything in between. Unfortunately, I can’t resolve the issue of not having enough hours in the day, so I’ve been forced to become very disciplined over the last few months. I’m running on a grueling schedule to finish this book before January, and with the holidays closing in, it’s only growing hard.

In times like this, I have to stay very in tune with myself. I’m pushing my mind to its limit writing at any free moment. Because no one wants a half-assed story from a burnt-out author, I have to know when to take breaks, too.

I always tell my friends to give themselves grace on the hard days. I should do the same for myself. And you should, too.
