Aalexus , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from within—and from my ancestors.
There’s something in me that naturally wants to overcome whatever feels challenging. Being an entrepreneur, especially as the founder of a fashion publication, is a journey that often feels bigger than me. But I come from a family that has always had to rise above obstacles, and I’ve seen that strength modeled firsthand. I carry that legacy with me. And above all, I lean on my faith in God. That’s my foundation.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the founder of Lex Styles Mag, a fashion and lifestyle publication dedicated to making style more inclusive, accessible, and representative of the underrepresented. What started as a vision to carve out space for people who rarely see themselves reflected in mainstream fashion has grown into a platform that amplifies emerging creatives, celebrates individuality, and champions community over clout.
What excites me most about the work I do is the way fashion becomes a tool for storytelling, healing, and connection. Whether it’s through our editorial shoots, community events, or personal styling services, Lex Styles Mag is about reminding people—especially Black, brown, disabled, and queer creatives—that there is a seat at the table for them. And if there isn’t one, we’ll build our own.
Right now, I’m focused on our 3rd annual Next Faces of Fashion event, happening this November, which will coincide with the launch of our music-themed anniversary issue. We’re featuring community artists on the cover and creating a space that blends fashion, faith, and culture in ways that feel authentic and empowering.
Lex Styles Mag isn’t just a brand. It’s a movement rooted in faith, family, and a fierce belief that style should reflect who we are—not who the world expects us to be.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey:
Curiosity — I’ve always been eager to explore things beyond what my immediate peers knew or understood. That willingness to learn and dive into unfamiliar territory opened doors and gave me a broader perspective.
Discipline — Building anything meaningful requires consistent effort and focus. Discipline helped me stay the course, especially when things got tough or progress felt slow.
Fearlessness in trying — I’ve never been afraid to take risks or try new ideas, even if failure was a possibility. Every attempt was a chance to learn and grow.
My advice for those early in their journey is to surround yourself with people who not only push you forward but also dream big. Being around ambitious, motivated individuals helps you believe that your own dreams are possible — and that kind of energy is invaluable when you face challenges or doubts.
