We were lucky to catch up with Aaron Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aaron , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I discovered my purpose simply by starting a project. Many people have ideas but hesitate to begin out of fear or uncertainty. Taking that first step on my initial project not only gave me the foundation to continue, it also built my confidence. As I started earning from my work, my self-belief only grew stronger. My advice to anyone with an idea is straightforward: just start. If you never begin, you might never find your true purpose or realize your potential. Starting is the key to unlocking growth, confidence, and fulfillment.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Aaron J Davis, an independent filmmaker with a passion for storytelling. My journey started with music videos—over 350 to date—working with top artists like Twista, Kevin Gates, and Lil Snupe. I’ve also directed three documentaries, including the award-winning “If I Walked Away,” and produced commercials for Fortune 50 companies such as UPS.
My true specialty is writing; I’ve written more than 20 short films and four features. My works include “Mom Told Me,” “If I Walked Away,” and my latest project, “Lovebugs,” a 2D animated film—all streaming on Amazon Prime.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important qualities that have shaped my journey are filming with cameras, editing, and building a strong network. Early on, I took on jobs for my close friend Edryce Hasan, driven by a determination to get something accomplished and learn the ropes. Filming music videos became my training ground; it’s where I developed my editing skills through real, hands-on experience. After completing five or six music videos, I began actively sharing my work and connecting with others who appreciated my creative style. Word spread quickly—people started accepting my rates, and almost overnight, I expanded from doing six music videos to thirty. thirty.
The best advice I can give is to just start with friends or family. Everyone needs photos or video, and you don’t have to be a professional right away—you just need examples to showcase your skills. The crucial part is taking that first step, even if it means starting small or imperfectly. Once you have something to show, opportunities will follow. Everyone needs a starting point, but the real key is simply beginning.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
To truly succeed as a filmmaker, I believe in being well-rounded and understanding every aspect of the craft—even if writing is your primary passion. When I first started, I had no idea how to film. My early projects in music videos and editing taught me a lot, but assembling a complete film remained a challenge.
I enrolled in college to learn critical technical skills like sound, lighting, and framing. Once I grasped those elements, I finally felt equipped to create my first short film. Even then, without a team, I had to handle every part of production myself. If I had only focused on writing, I would have needed to pay others thousands of dollars for filming and editing. I became more independent, resourceful, and confident—ultimately allowing me to bring my creative visions to life without relying solely on others.
