Meet Aaron Knight

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aaron Knight. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aaron below.

Aaron, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I can’t pinpoint a specific moment where I knew my confidence and self esteem were high, I just always remember not being afraid to say something or have eyes on me. As a kid I just thought highly of myself, I guess that comes from being told I was special and a miracle as a child. I was diagnosed with cancer, leukemia to be exact around five months old. Battling that and beating it as a toddler shaped how I saw myself. If I can beat cancer, then I can do anything. So, I have carried that mentality with me and my self esteem and confidence just grew throughout the years. I was never afraid to jump on a stage and speak publicly, present something to a class. Which is all really ironic considering I am very introverted by nature. There are moments where I can be a bit shy, but I soon shake it off and my confidence takes over and everything seems so easy.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

To keep it simple, I’m an on air host for KUTX 98.9, but my job is a lot more than what my salary shows. I cohost the award winning, top rated Saturday night Hip Hop and R&B radio show, The Breaks. Along with hosting on air for the radio station, I run the award winning Austin rap centered playlist, New Fresh City and help curate events with KUTX like our annual SXSW showcase, SXSBREAKS, and the annual summer show, Summer Jam that has been apart of the Red River Cultural Districts, Hot Summer Nights the past two years. I have also created a music video show showcasing Austin-based Rap and R&B artists, sort of an Austin Rap City. That is currently on hiatus and still being worked on. My job allows me to meet rising, and current music stars, be in places that I might not thought I’d be in. My career is music media has allowed me to represent my community in my own way, whether it’s speaking on news shows about current political topics, or speaking at elementary schools, and organizing time for artists to give back to the community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Oh man, that’s a tough one to answer. I’d have to say persistence, the gift of gab, and being consistent. All three of those qualities and skills helped me get to where I’m at. For years in school I was the talkative kid in class, now look at me getting paid to express my thoughts and opinions. I stayed consistent in just working not matter if it was freelance writing, blogging, podcasting, to radio, I just kept working, and continuing to meet goals set for myself.

I’d tell anybody in anything to just stay working, practice and hone your skills. Set goals for yourself and work to meet them. Consistency is key, at least that’s how I feel.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

Not needing everyone’s validation. Now I’m not saying I was going out of my way to make sure everyone saw me and gave me my praise, just more that now regardless if people see what I do or not, it doesn’t matter…as much. I think we all want validation to a certain degree, I’m now not stressed if it doesn’t come. I’ve come to a place in my career where I know what I’ve done and my value, and don’t need everyone to give me the praise. While I’ll take it, I just don’t have anything to prove to anyone anymore about who I am and what I do.
