Aaron , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
My Creativity.
I have nothing to do with keeping it alive, it has it’s own life. It is an ever burning light, like the sun, I always turn to for clarity. It is the thing which gives me my identity. When I engage with my creativity I see revelations. Creativity is my religion. It’s a spiritual relationship. My creativity has guided me through life, showing me how to navigate the world. Creativity is my best and most loyal friend. It provides for me. It helps me to solve problems. I can’t say enough about creativity. But I will end this by saying Creativity defines me as “A Creator” directly under he whom I refer to as “The Creator”.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am always a creative thinker, but I am mostly known around the world as a fashion designer. What is most exciting about being a creator/fashion designer is challenging myself to develop products that solve problems in people’s lives and up lifts their spirit. In the fashion industry I am known as Sir Benni Miles New York. I developed this name while searching for a new name for my clothing brand. My birth name is Aaron “Benjamin” Miles which is where it came from. My mindset was to create a name for myself with prestige. A name which would give people who addressed me no choice but to show respect. Even if they didn’t want to show respect. And after playing with a few variations of my middle name with “Mister” Sir Benni Miles New York was born. I used my middle name because I remember hating when my mother would use it to call me. Besides that, I figured it would be a good time to utilize it since I rarely used it for any other reasons. I created the name Sir Benni Miles New York in 1995 and by 1996 it was an officially registered US Trademark. By 2000 the name was globally recognized and stolen from my by a German company who eventually would transfer it to Dirty Jerz GmbH. A German company owned and operated by Marc Ecko of Ecko Ultd. I chased this guy around for 20 years trying to retrieve ownership of my trademark, brand and identity. Finally I was able to get it back after noticing he allowed my trademark status to die failing to keep the Trademark maintained. At this point, upon noticing the trademark in this abandoned status, I decided to re-register my brand and this is how I retrieved my name. Today the brand has a new remodeled image which now includes an official logo and monogram print. I have developed several new products using the new monogram print. I have also created a new brand “I Love Health and Hospitals” by Sir Benni Miles New York. Which is a creative designer brand specialized in healthcare apparel, accessories and medical equipment. It is currently available online at Instagram and Walmart.com
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey were one, to be confident in your creative ability and expression. Two never trust anyone and three learn not only to expect failure but pursue it and look forward to it as if it were your most dependable teacher or professor. Advice I would give for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these three things is first get a clear vision of who you are and what you believe your value to be. Never compromise yourself or your integrity. Define your style and what distinguishes you from others. Keep your ideas to yourself until you are ready to release them to the public. And always push forward, never turn back to engage with those people and issue which trail behind you. Once you’re in the front, they will always have to follow you and your lead.
