We recently connected with Aaron Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Aaron , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Music has been a part of my life as early as I can remember. My grandfather was a classical and jazz piano player. I loved listening to him practice when I was young. He noticed that I had expressed interest in learning. He sat me down at the piano and began with my ear training. At first it was individual notes. Then we moved on to identifying simple chords.
At 10 years old my father brought home the album that would change my life at such a early age. He brought home the Ozzy Osbourne “Randy Rhodes Tribute” album. After hearing how Randy played guitar made me want to play guitar the same way. My next birthday I got my first guitar and amplifier. That began my lifelong musical journey.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the guitarist for Tampa, Florida based metal band Blood of Angels. We began in 2015 and released our debut ep titled “Rise of the Fallen Gods” in 2017. Our debut single “Odin’s Wrath” won numerous music awards including the 2018 Independent Music Award for “Best Metal/Hardcore song at Lincoln Center in NYC.
Since then, we have released our first full-length album “Failure of Faith” in 2020 and toured throughout the U.S.
Our latest single “Spillage”, that was released in October of 2022 has brought us additional attention and accolades. With numerous independent radio station placements. That single is currently nominated for the Hollywood Independent Music Award for the Rock/Metal category. The ceremony will take place August 17th at The Avalon in Los Angeles, CA
We are also working on our new album titled “Les Angst ov Thanatos”. The album should be out sometime next summer.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The qualities that have been most impactful are what I call the three p’s. Persistence, perseverance, and practice. Nothing happens overnight. Everyone’s artistic journey is different. Just because your personal journey is not toward the commercial side of the business, does not mean that it is any less significant.
Music is a difficult art, and an even more difficult business. Sometimes the two conflict often. Business will always want you to compromise. Some of these compromises are tough to agree to.
My advice to anyone who wants to pursue this career is to save your money. Opportunities do cost money. No one will work for you, and help you advance from the kindness of their heart. The other part is following your vision without compromise. If it isn’t the popular sound today, doesn’t mean it won’t be the popular sound in the future.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
“All You Need To Know About the Music Business” by Donald S Passman. That book was the beginning of my deep dive into gaining knowledge of how the business of music works.
The book covered so much, the chapters regarding the breakdown of different music license and how they worked as part of the music business.
