We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aaron Vaughn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aaron below.
Aaron, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Health & beauty professionals know that being a standout in any room is a positive! I have learned to embrace my uniqueness and appreciate the value that it brings to my craft. Instead of conforming to fit the norms and expectations set by others, I have developed my own signature style that sets me apart from the rest. This has allowed me to establish a clientele who appreciates not only my skills but also my individuality.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My approach is rooted in the client’s natural texture & color. I work to accentuate the positive & downplay more challenging aspects. This not only yields the most seamless grow out, it preserves the unique aspects which are the essence of the client. The thing that makes her stand out in any room.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Because we work with chemistry, a thorough understanding of all services & protocols is essential. This type of highly structured, repetitive learning is challenging for cosmetology students & assistants, who are typically creative mavericks. Early in my career I learned to allow space for both technical & intuitive skill to exist. I encourage young stylists & assistants to allow time for creative exploration & rule-breaking. The intersection of honed technique & creative intuitive is where the magic happens
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for new stylists. Cosmetology grads who are interested in honing their technique & nurturing their creative intuition can reach out to the salon at aaronvaughnhair.com
