We recently connected with Abbie Lewis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Abbie, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I credit my work ethic to my parents, who have set a lifelong example of dedication and resilience. My mom has been a nurse since she was in her twenties, and her compassion and commitment to caring for others has always inspired me. My dad recently retired after a full career at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, where he showed me the value of consistency, loyalty, and showing up every day with integrity.
They were also my biggest supporters in sports, especially soccer, which I played through college at Oakland University. Their encouragement instilled in me a sense of discipline, teamwork, and the importance of setting goals—and sticking to them. Whether I was chasing a championship or starting a new chapter in life, they were always behind me, helping me stay driven and grounded.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a family photographer based in Rochester Hills, Michigan, and I specialize in capturing natural, heartfelt moments that reflect the real connection between loved ones. My sessions are relaxed, playful, and focused on creating space for families to just be themselves—whether that’s through giggles, quiet cuddles, or the beautiful chaos that comes with young kids.
What excites me most is freezing those fleeting, everyday moments that parents often find themselves wishing they could hold onto just a little longer. I know how quickly time moves, especially with little ones, and it’s incredibly special to be able to give families tangible memories they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
At the heart of my work is the belief that your story—messy, beautiful, and uniquely yours—is worth documenting with care and intention. My brand is about authenticity, connection, and celebrating the season you’re in right now.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been resilience, curiosity, and connection.
Resilience has been key—especially in the moments when things didn’t go as planned, or when self-doubt crept in. Running a creative business means navigating ups and downs, and the ability to keep going, learn from setbacks, and stay grounded in your why is everything. For anyone just starting out: expect challenges, but know that they’re not stop signs. They’re just part of the process.
Curiosity has fueled my growth creatively and professionally. Whether it was learning new techniques, studying light, or understanding how to better serve clients, staying curious kept me from getting stagnant. Early on, embrace the learning curve. Ask questions, experiment, and don’t be afraid to be a beginner—it’s where your best growth will come from.
Connection is the heart of what I do. From how I relate to the families I photograph to how I build community with other creatives, relationships have been a huge part of what’s helped me grow. For those starting out, nurture your people skills. Listen well, show up authentically, and don’t underestimate the power of a kind word or genuine collaboration.
Each of these qualities has helped shape both my art and my business, and I believe they’re things anyone can intentionally cultivate with time and heart.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who truly values connection. They want to capture the real moments: the laughter, the cuddles, the chaos, the love. They’re usually families who see photos as more than a checkbox on the to-do list; they see them as a way to preserve this fleeting season of life, exactly as it is.
They trust the process, come in with an open heart, and aren’t afraid to let their kids be themselves during a session. Whether that means running barefoot through a field or clinging to mom for snuggles, they understand that those little unscripted moments are what make the photos meaningful.
Ultimately, my favorite clients are the ones who care most about capturing feeling—because that’s what will matter most when they look back years from now.
