We recently connected with Abbie O’Brien and have shared our conversation below.
Abbie , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
As a mom, brand designer, and yogi, I fuel my creativity by embracing inspiration from everyday moments and the world around me. Whether it’s a coffee date with a friend, a trip to an island to recharge, or scrolling Instagram for fresh ideas, I find sparks everywhere. Driving around, I notice signs, logos, and billboards, and even packaging labels at the grocery store remind me that design is all around us. These observations and experiences infuse my work with energy and originality.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
The Branding Den is a creative design agency specializing in brand design, logo creation, and website design. We partner with in-house teams, agencies, and businesses of all sizes to transform visions into strategic, captivating concepts that tell unique brand stories. By blending creativity with strategy, The Branding Den helps brands of all sizes create meaningful connections, drive engagement, and achieve their goals.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three key qualities and skills that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning:
1. Resilience: Navigating challenges, for example – I was laid off from my corporate Creative Director role during the COVID pandemic in 2020. It taught me to stay grounded and use my passion as an opportunity for growth – I opened my own creative agency during a very unknown time.
2. Adaptability: Pivoting from a part-time freelance wedding invitation business to corporate branding required new skills and services – email design, social media design, video editing, etc to become a full service creative agency. My advice to anyone reading is to stay open to learning and evolving with market demands.
3. Continuous Learning: Keeping up with design and digital trends ensures I bring fresh ideas to clients.Stay curious and invest in online education and local networking. YouTube is your friend!
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one challenge I’m currently facing is managing the balance between scaling my business and maintaining personalized, high-quality service for clients. As a solo entrepreneur, it can be difficult to juggle creative output, client relationships, and administrative tasks while planning for growth.
To overcome this, I’m working on streamlining processes, leveraging tools like project management software, and considering partnerships or hiring for specific tasks. This allows me to focus on strategic and creative work while ensuring clients continue to receive exceptional service.
