We recently connected with Abby Clapper and have shared our conversation below.
Abby, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I have felt imposter syndrome in almost every aspect of my life throughout my life! It can be difficult to overcome, and honestly, it is a daily choice to overcome second guessing myself. As common as imposter syndrome is, there is a way around it. When I start to feel it creeping up, I take that opportunity to remind myself of all of the times that I have gotten through hard situations. I use examples like: graduating college with two majors, moving a way from my family across the country, studying abroad by myself, starting my own business, and living a sober lifestyle. Those thinks are all pretty stinking hard! So if I can overcome those things and still come out with success, who is to say that when I’m feeling imposter syndrome that I can’t still come out successful on the other side? I am an active believer in going to therapy, and this is something I address with my therapist regularly so I can continue to remind myself that I can do hard things!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a personal trainer, online coach, and the host of the podcast Talk Your Abs Off. My passion is helping people embrace healthy living in a way that’s sustainable, empowering, and aligned with their individual needs. On my podcast, I dive into topics that inspire wellness from all angles—whether it’s talking about strength training as we age, preventing injuries, or fostering a healthy relationship with movement and food. I also bring on incredible guests like running coaches, motivational speakers, and wellness experts to share their unique insights.
One thing I strive to make special about my work is the focus on inclusivity and balance. Fitness isn’t just about aesthetics or ticking off a to-do list—it’s about showing up for yourself in ways that honor your body and mind. That’s something I try to weave into each program for my clients.
Recently, I launched a free resource that is created to help you build a sustainable workout routine that fits with your schedule. Complete with a habit tracker, calendar, exercise index, and workout planner, you have everything you need to start planning your workout success! It can be found at www.endorfinwellness.com/free-resources.
At the end of the day, I want people to feel like wellness is approachable and that they’re never alone in their journey. Whether someone listens to my podcast, takes a class with me, or joins one of my programs, my hope is they feel supported, seen, and empowered to live their best, healthy lives.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that I think are essential are empathy, being relational, and having the science to back up why we do what we do. That is my own personal secret sauce that has led me to this point in my career! I am honored that people trust me with their health and wellness journeys, and let me walk alongside them to help reach their goals.
If someone is looking to increase their empathy or improve relationships, my first step would be to just listen more. A lot of people like to talk and share knowledge, which can be great. But when you are helping someone toward their goal, you shouldn’t be doing the talking. People trust you when you listen to them. They can tell if you genuinely care about them and what they are going through.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who is ready to embrace a healthier lifestyle and wants guidance to do it in a way that feels balanced and sustainable. They value fitness and wellness not just for aesthetic goals but as a way to feel stronger, more confident, and energized in their everyday life.
They’re often busy professionals, parents, or individuals juggling multiple responsibilities who need programs that fit into their lifestyle rather than take it over. They’re open to learning, motivated to show up for themselves, and appreciate a holistic approach that prioritizes both physical and mental well-being.
My ideal client resonates with the idea of movement being a form of self-care, and they would like a trainer who can meet them where they are—whether they’re just starting out, getting back into fitness, or pushing toward a new goal.
Above all, they’re looking for someone who empowers them to make sustainable changes while creating a sense of community and support along the way. They value progress over perfection and want to feel like they’re sitting down for coffee with a friend who gets them.
