Abby, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I think confidence and self esteem is something that many artists struggle to hold on to throughout their entire artistic journey. But I believe something that will always bring it back is remembering that as the only Abby Park, I have my own unique experiences and story to tell. My work is valuable because I have something to say, and I have my own completely unique perspective.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hello! My name is Abby Park and I’m an illustrator who creates work often centered around themes of human connection and the beauty of simple things, especially childhood nostalgia. I graduated with a BFA in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology. I am looking to transition my career into the animation industry to work on visual development and concept art.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say a dream, relentless drive, and community. Since I was little I’ve always wanted to be an artist. During times of discouragement, I would remember that I was working towards a lifelong dream of mine, and that it was worth it. Having a relentless drive is essential to be an artist because if no one else cares about your work, then who will? As much as resting is an absolute essential, being able to push yourself to create when you don’t want to is an important quality to have. Community is the third thing I’ve found to be extremely important to my growth as an artist. Through art school, I was able to form close friendships with very talented and hardworking artists who inspire me and are able to give me artistic advice. I’ve found that your artistic flow can be greatly benefitted if you are in an artistic environment. My advice for artists who are early on in their journey would be to remember why you first wanted to become an artist, balance rest with relentless hard work, and build relationships with artistic people in your circles.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Currently I am facing a period of burnout. After working on a huge project earlier this year while taking little to no rest, I found that I became resistant from wanting to create for a while. I think the thought of how much work I want to put in to improve my work became overwhelming. So, to combat this, I’ve been trying to rest my body and mind and have fun. I think life experiences away from art are actually really important and can absolutely inform your artistic process. I also want to create work without the pressure of it becoming a portfolio piece, and rediscover what I truly love to create.
