We recently connected with Abigail H. Kim and have shared our conversation below.
Abigail H. , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
For me, it’s all about surrounding myself with creative environment. Be it a museum visit, or a meeting with fellow creatives, when I put myself in a creative world, I become one. I feel like making a connection with a world is a human trait. If something is out there with you, you would have to interact with it. That said, if you find yourself in a creative space, you would be almost forced to interact with that creativity around you. Treat a creativity like a cherished treasure inside you – the more attention you give it, the bigger and richer it becomes. Keep a regular eye on the creativity – grow it and take care of it. It is what makes you, ‘you’.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Abigail H. Kim. I illustrate and write for children, mostly picture books. Making a picture book is my passion and joy. I find picture books to be a very fascinating – it has stories and scenes. It may not have a sound or make noises (although some books with physical speakers may do), but you can make your own voice as you move on. Sometimes it has a lesson, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it feels like you’re looking at an art at a museum. Sometimes it feels like watching a movie. I noticed almost everyone get different experiences when reading with picture books – it interacts with their inner self, beliefs, or points of view. The possibilities are enormous. In this infinite world of making picture book, I find freedom and joy.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The words perseverance, tenacity, and patient come into my mind. Those are some qualities that got through touch times. Having the quality of perseverance molded me into person who keeps going, which is the most important quality in times of challenging days. The hard times will pass, but knowing it or seeing it would be difficult sometimes. Perseverance teaches me to not give up. Tenacity is similar quality that makes you a determined person. Being determined means taking responsibility of yourself. I notice my self-esteem to run low through difficult times. Being responsible and taking care of yourself takes time and effort. It makes you tenacious and determined, because you see your self-worth. Patience would be the most hard quality of all three, especially when things don’t go the way we want. In this lets-move-on and scroll-down culture of life, it’s easy to be impatient. It may sound cliche, but I find looking through the lense of joy and gratitude is very powerful element that help one to be patient. Put the focus on a big picture – what is your goal and where are you now? If you’re working on it, it means you are on the way to the finishing line, no matter outcome is. One day you will get to the finish line, and you are on the move to there.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always on the lookout for collaboration with other creatives in any fields. If my skills in arts and design could benefit any creatives in any fields, I would be thrilled to collaborate. They can connect with me by sending me an email through my website, or through a DM.
