Meet Abigail Hewitt

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Abigail Hewitt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Abigail below.

Abigail, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
From enduring a painfully shy childhood to embracing my power and standing boldly today, my creative pursuits have played a significant role in shaping my self-perception and transforming my life. I was bullied throughout my school years for being different and that also had a negative effect on my self-confidence and esteem. Engaging in various artistic endeavors became my sanctuary- a place where I could express myself without fear or judgement hence my business name ‘The Sanctuary Design Studio’. Through artistic expression, I discovered a sense of purpose and a newfound belief in life and my abilities. The more I immersed myself in my creative pursuits, the more I realized my fears were merely obstacles I had the power to overcome. The more I realized that I could create my own reality outside of what was projected onto me. It was a means of expressing the things I could not express with words.

Recognizing and celebrating my achievements no matter how small became an integral part of boosting my confidence and self-esteem. Taking the time to acknowledge the progress I’ve made allowed me to appreciate my own worth and capabilities. One of the most significant breakthroughs in my journey was learning to embrace failure as a steppingstone rather than a setback. Creative ventures often involve trial and error and instead of being discouraged by setbacks, I learned to view them as valuable learning experiences. This shift in mindset and perspective allowed me to become more resilient.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Art has always been a vital force in my life, ever since I came into existence. I have a deep-rooted passion for helping individuals discover and unlock their hidden superpowers through the medium of art. This burning desire led me to establish The Sanctuary Design Studio – a brand that not only prides itself on its exceptional quality but also serves as a haven for healing and self-discovery through artistic expression.

The journey of building this brand has been nothing short of exhilarating and fulfilling for me. It has provided me with a platform to share my love for art therapy and design with others. My ultimate aim is to create a warm and inclusive space where people can seek solace, draw inspiration, and receive support. I am immensely grateful for the various ways in which this vision is materializing.

At The Sanctuary Design Studio, we offer an array of eco-friendly handmade products, workshops, and services that cater to the unique therapeutic and creative needs of individuals. Our products are crafted with utmost care, ensuring that they not only bring joy to the user but also contribute to the well-being of the environment. Through our workshops and services, we strive to empower individuals by providing them with the tools and guidance necessary to explore the transformative power of art.

I am thrilled about the prospects that lie ahead as I continue to develop and provide new avenues for creative expression and healing in wellness retreats both in Jamaica and on an international scale. Taking the next big step by establishing my own non-profit organization to offer therapeutic art in retirement homes, prisons, and marginalized communities is a significant milestone in my journey.

Being a therapeutic art coach and designer is an incredibly rewarding experience that allows me to make a positive impact not only on the lives of others but also on my own. It merges my deep passion for art with my sincere desire to assist others in enhancing their mental well-being. By utilizing various art therapy techniques, I am able to provide unwavering support to individuals as they embark on their personal journey of self-discovery and healing.
One of the most exhilarating aspects of being a therapeutic art coach is bearing witness to the remarkable progress and transformation that my clients undergo. It is truly awe-inspiring to observe their personal growth as they delve into their creative process and utilize art as a means of self-expression, healing, and self-discovery. The profound impact that art can have on one’s mental health and overall well-being is undeniable, and it brings me immense joy to be able to facilitate this transformative experience for others.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Throughout my life journey, there have been three qualities that have had a profound impact on my growth and development. The first quality that stands out is resilience. Resilience has been instrumental in helping me overcome setbacks, conquer challenges, and continue moving forward despite the obstacles I have faced. It is important to recognize that setbacks and failures are inevitable in any journey. However, it is how we respond to these difficulties that truly matters. In addition, practicing self-care is vital for maintaining a healthy mindset. Taking time for activities that bring joy and relaxation, such as exercise, meditation and therapeutic art exercises, have helped to build mental strength and resilience. Nurturing oneself physically, emotionally, and mentally allows for a better capacity to face challenges head-on.

The second quality that has had a significant impact on my journey is adaptability. Life is ever-changing, and being able to adapt to new circumstances has been essential to my growth and success. Being adaptable means being open to new ideas, perspectives, approaches and pivoting where necessary. I’ve been very flexible and willing to adjust my plans and strategies when necessary. It has fostered deeper creativity, problem-solving skills, and my ability to seize opportunities that arise. Embracing change and being adaptable have led to great personal and professional growth, allowing me to thrive in various environments.

The third quality that has been impactful on my journey is perseverance. It is that determination to keep going, even when the path ahead seems difficult or uncertain. My high school motto is ‘Strength and Perseverance’ and this is something I have always used as my mantra. My perseverance has been essential because it has given me the strength to overcome obstacles and achieve my goals. It definitely requires dedication, discipline, and a strong belief in oneself. By remaining steadfast in the face of difficulties, I’ve built resilience and developed a sense of accomplishment and expansive self-confidence.

Embarking on a new journey, be it in personal or professional life, can be both exciting and challenging. My advice to persons who are in the early stage of their journey is to embrace a growth mindset, cultivate self-awareness, practice self-discipline and celebrate your small victories. The shift in perspective in how you view your life, and you will be a pivotal moment in your life.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Learning to let go has been a powerful catalyst for my personal growth and development. It involves releasing attachments to things that no longer serve me, whether they are negative thought patterns, toxic relationships, or limiting beliefs. By consciously choosing to let go, I have created space for new opportunities, positive experiences, and personal transformation. This period has been marked by a profound realization that one of the biggest areas of growth lies in mastering the art of letting go.

I realized that holding onto self-doubt, fear, and limiting beliefs only hindered my progress and most often this was being subconsciously done. Through mindfulness practices with art therapy and self-reflection, I learned to identify these patterns and replace them with positive affirmations and empowering thoughts. This shift in mindset has allowed me to embrace new challenges with confidence and resilience.

Another significant aspect of letting go has been detaching myself from toxic relationships. I have come to understand that surrounding myself with negativity drains my energy and hinders my personal growth. By setting healthy boundaries and prioritizing my well-being, I have been able to let go of relationships that no longer align with my values and aspirations. This has created space for nurturing connections and meaningful relationships that support my personal growth.

Letting go has also taught me the value of embracing change and uncertainty. In the past, I often clung to comfort zones and resisted change. However, I now realize that growth lies outside of these familiar boundaries. By letting go of the need for control and embracing uncertainty, I have opened myself up to new experiences, opportunities, and personal development. Embracing change has allowed me to discover hidden strengths and broaden my perspectives. I am excited for all that lies ahead.
