Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abigail Mosher. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abigail , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I think an open mind and the ability to have fun are two crucial characteristics to sustain creativity. Although I specialize in graduate and family photography, I love to experiment with nature and editorial photography. I get a lot of inspiration from being in the Tampa area since it is home to so much activity.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a freelance photographer in the Tampa Bay area. I mostly do graduate photos, but I am trying to branch out into family photography as well. The intention of my work is ‘find the beauty.’ Growing up, my mom always had pictures around the house of our memories and the joy we have in being together. No matter what struggles we were going through at the time, there was a joy to be found and beauty in the memories we made. That’s where ‘find the beauty’ comes from, for me. With my little business, I love having the privilege of capturing those memories for other people. These are the photos that will hang on walls and be put in photo albums to reflect on for years, if not generations, to come. It is with no small amount of honor and gratitude that I photograph these moments for my clients.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I was taught from a young age that hard work pays off. I think that having a strong work ethic, especially as a small business owner or freelancer, is vital if you want to get anywhere. Another great skill is networking, which is something I am working on. I’m learning that, a lot of times, it’s not what you know but who you know. Lastly, you need courage in your business journey. I have found that the more I believe in myself, the easier others find it to believe in me. Confidence comes from within, not from outside validation. It’s good to take measured risks; it is what will end up getting your name out there and set you apart from the crowd. Any knowledge that I have has come from the wisdom of others. If you are looking to develop your skills or expertise, I always think researching is the first step. There are tons of podcasts, books, and articles about all of the things I mentioned. With all of these resources out there, it would be a shame if we didn’t all take advantage of them.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
If we’re talking about overall character development, God is my ultimate teacher and guidance. He knows my heart, and He knows what I need and when I need it. He is the master at giving me the tools that will help me along my journey and giving them in perfect timing. Where I fail, He provides. If we’re talking about people, my answer is my mom. Everyone needs a support system that uplifts and understands them. My mom has been my most consistent advocate throughout my life. I go to her for advice on pretty much every area of my life, and she can usually pinpoint the source of my discontent before I do. When I feel discouraged or overwhelmed, my mom is able to put things into perspective with practical application and logic. When I am too logical, my mom helps me see others with compassion and love. I couldn’t have asked for a better role model or mentor to walk this journey with me.
