Meet Achea Redd

We recently connected with Achea Redd and have shared our conversation below.

Achea, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?

For self care I practice yoga a few times per week, exercise regularly, attend therapy sessions, and engage in reiki energy work.

The yoga and reiki in particular have helped me connect back to my body and become connected once again to spirituality. Ultimately, that has impacted my relationship with myself in a very positive way which increases my effectiveness in everything else I do.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’ve written 3 books all within the self help genre. My journey has had many ups and downs including a very chaotic childhood. Raised in a two parent home with my father as a prominent pastor, I had very little say as to what path I was allowed to take. That led to a very severe mental health crisis that became an awakening for me. It was this awakening that led me to what would be my life’s work.
I’m currently working on my fourth book and serving on the boards of The National Alliance for Eating Disorders and The Center for Family Safety and Healing.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1) Curiosity – insatiable desire to learn new information about any subject so that I can be diverse in my knowledge base, while staying completely open minded and objective
2) Public Speaking – take any opportunity to speak in front of big and small audiences. This will help you in any arena no matter what path you take. If nothing else you will learn to communicate effectively.
3) Give yourself permission to REST. Burnout is very real. Pace yourself, there’s always tomorrow and even if tomorrow never comes what you’ve done today is good enough. The enemy of good is perfect. So be ok with the “good”

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My biggest area of growth is learning to take responsibility for the things I can control and change. All of the other stuff has nothing to do with me and is beyond my control so letting go is the best gift you could give yourself. In short, I’ve learned not to care so much. You can make some things in life happen, but life also happens on its own. Learn to discern the difference.
