Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adam Defrin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Adam, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Remaining optimistic is one of the most important traits towards succeeding in life, in my opinion. As you get older, your optimism starts to fade by nature, because you face many more hardships as an adult than you did as a child. As a result, you start to expect the worst, because things don’t go your way as often. I go out of my way to remain optimistic every chance I get in life because I believe that when you have that attitude, things are more likely to go your way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a video creator and entertainer and have been shooting, directing, editing, and performing visual arts for myself and clients for 20 years. I started by making comedy rap videos for my YouTube channel out of my parents’ basement, and I now have my own Content Company based in New York City. I try to keep a healthy balance of passion and professional projects, creating my own content in my downtime from my client work. I’ve been described as a “one-stop-shop” because I do it all myself. From concepting, writing, shooting, directing, editing, animating, sound designing, audio mixing, and even often performing VO and On Camera.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say the 3 most important qualities to have are:
1. Good People Skills: Even in the face of adversity, it’s important to put on a smiling face and make those around you feel happy to be in your presence. If you’re not pleasant to work with, nobody will want to.
2. The ability to speak out: In this world, you don’t get anything you don’t ask for. If you feel you deserve a raise, ask for one. If you’re unhappy with your roles and responsibilities, request they be changed. You have to be happy doing what you do, and if you’re not, then speak up.
3. The ability to learn: There’s a saying “Fake it ’till you make it”. If you’re asked to do something and you don’t necessarily know how to do it, don’t let them know that right away. Act like you can do it, then go home and research how to do it. It’s more than likely that you will then understand how to get it done, and you won’t have lost an opportunity. But, if you still don’t know how to get it done after doing your research, it’s important to have the humility to then admit you’re falling short and ask for help, rather than being stubborn and creating a weak product.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I worked at an advertising agency for 15 years, but 1 year ago they let me go. I became a full-time freelancer and created my own LLC. In the year that I’ve been self-employed, I have earned twice the amount of income as I did while working for the agency. I have been working day and night in order to accomplish that, and I am only one man who’s only physically capable of doing so much work. So my next step is to figure out how to grow. I am thinking of building a roster of other talented production people, so that I can outsource some of my work and not miss any opportunities for new business that way. It’s never good to be offered a profitable project but be too busy to accept it. I’d like to be able to accept them all, and figure out a way to keep that source of income flowing to prevent plateauing.
