We were lucky to catch up with Adam Gomez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Adam, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Well, I’m an “Optimistic Pessimist” to be honest. I get fairly sinical and pessimistic as things come my way, but somehow I always find it in me to see bad situations as something that can be weathered, and that a blue sky awaits. I’m not certain exactly where it comes from, but I always find it. Maybe it’s an obsession of always wanting to dig to find what ‘needs’ to be found. I think subconsciously I may believe that finding that shining light of positivity is crucial for survival.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a touring and recording Drummer in So-Cal, and touring the world is a part of my existence. I am also a Husband and a ‘Girl -Dad’ to my 7-year-old Daughter. I’ve been exclusively drumming with Punk Rock band The Dickies for 12 years, and mostly sub-in as well with Punk and Rock bands like Adolescents, D.I., CJ Ramone, David and the Curse, etc.
The special part about all of it, is that I’ve been given a chance here on this earth to inspire my Daughter and the next generation to find and do something that they love in life, and enjoy it while they’re here. There’s plenty of bad going on all the time, but we can always contribute to creating some good for ourselves and for the people around us. THAT creates change.
Right now, I am working with my Sister’s band ‘<b>Bueno.</b>’ to finish their latest works. I’ve been doing drums on those tracks. And I just got a call this morning from Stan Lee (<b>The Dickies</b>) about checking out a new demo so we can move forward in putting it together (<i>we are almost done with the full length record, I promise!</i>) and I also got some emails this morning with some new John Massari (Composer for film/TV/) songs that I’ll be arranging and recording drums for. Metal type stuff. Excited!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If you’re early on your journey, know that becoming great at what you love is just a matter of making that thing a part of your everyday life. I don’t mean to literally do that thing every single day, but damn near it. You also gotta know that through your journey, it won’t be all easy-peezy, just because you love it. What we love will also challenge us; that’s just a part of life. Don’t let those moments <b>fool</b> you. You can push through. It’s your choice and your choice alone.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, I don’t drink alcohol, and I don’t blow up at anyone. Those things (for me personally) just makes everything worse, and I don’t see any sunny days ahead on those paths. They don’t make sense to me. Usually, I clench my jaw and mentally talk myself down and tell myself that staying flustered will only bring a larger tsunami of overwhelmingness. So I do that, and also ‘step back’ from the situation; in my head and even physically sometimes. Things that hold love and meaning to me are still around. I find them for a minute. That always helps me find a new and different angle towards what is overwhelming me.
