Meet Adam O’Day

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Adam O’Day a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Adam, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

Creating with my children has been the key for my surrealism to keep flowing. As far as my landscapes are concerned, I’m always searching for things I want to paint. I just have to find something that is beautiful in everyday life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m currently focused on finishing 4 art shows/exhibits. I’m always most excited about the current project, whatever it is. The one that has my full attention is a show of paintings from when I was an architect for the Navy in 2009-2014. It’s strongly influenced by structural engineering. The show can be viewed at the time and place below:

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three skills I’m glad to have are computer skills, woodworking, and materials knowledge.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?

My ideal client is someone who trusts the recipe and lets me create without too much input. I think that’s why artists will shut down commissions sometimes. Because we lose why we are doing it in the first place when someone else is using us as human printers for their own ideas.
