Meet Adebessi Charles Wong

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adebessi Charles Wong. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Adebessi, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I stumbled on my purpose by accident. What started out as adversity in my life has transitioned into purpose for
me. In May of 2017 I was diagnosed with stage 3
breast cancer, in my quest to destress and find
relaxation from all the complications and anxiety of
cancer and everything that came with it I stumbled
on a fascinating hobby “Making candles.”

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
This hobby allowed me to share personal experiences with others and tell my life’s story. What I had discovered is instead of finding a little relaxation, I had found a way to relax for hours at a time through the art of a “Lighted Candle and intoxicating fragrances.” I had stumbled on a way to bring relaxation to many others as well. Through sending care packages to other survivors to enhance wellness and relaxation. This hobby has now turned into an amazing passion of mine. I have expanded the brand past candles and now make other fragrance products. Most exciting is the opportunity to give back to the community through my brand. In addition, to giving a portion of the all sales from Diamond Melts back to the Breast Cancer community for resources, research and awareness; I also speak at local events in encouraging, inspirating, motivating and sharing my story of purpose and passion.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe understanding the brand story/message is critical to the direction of your business. When I first started, I focused on making what I liked and while this was great and led to many sales the vision was not clear and rebranding was necessary. Additionally, owning a business will be a lesson in patience and flexibility, two areas that have become my biggest friends on this path to success. As the brand continued to grow and expand, I found that it was also necessary to rebrand to continue to increase the image and visibility of the brand. This process was and still is tricky because there are so many moving parts. Unexpected hick ups were a big factor and everything I thought would be a quick decision like packing selection, photo decision and website updates took six months more than anticipated, challenging my patience and ability to be flexible.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
This is an exciting question for me as I have just collaborated with my oldest daughter Angelique Wong who Fashion designer and the owner of Artuza Clothing; to open a fashion and fragrance boutique in downtown Cleveland OH at City Goods. City goods is a retail space focused on makers and creators like me. I would love to continue this journey of collaboration/partnership with Luxury spaces, Retail spaces and boutiques. I truly believe that fragrances are the biggest triggers of memories. My tag line is “Fragrances Forever” because we create our candles has a way of lingering in your space and memory long after the candlelight goes out
