We recently connected with Adrian Jules and have shared our conversation below.
Adrian, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from a tiny Haitian immigrant woman named Marcilia Jules, my mother. Early in life, she taught me to go after what I wanted and allow no one or thing to deter me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a storyteller; whether I’m writing stories of my own via screenplays or playing a character created by another writer, it’s what I love to do most.
My ultimate goal in the entertainment industry is to tell the stories I don’t currently see on television. I know it sounds “cliche,” but I want to create worlds and characters that the masses have yet to see and leave a legacy of films that live on even after I’m gone.
I’m currently wrapping up a film spec project entitled Black Friday, described as The Purge meets Superstore. I had a blast bringing it to life on paper, and I am now taking steps to bring it to the big screen.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Know your WHY; it’ll keep you going when you’re on the verge of packing it up and going home.
Be kind to yourself; as an artist, we’re hyper-critical of all things regarding our work; don’t beat yourself up.
Believe! Believe! BELIEVE!
How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I faced my own mortality after a lung collapse and emergency surgery in 2022. However, spending nearly two weeks in the intensive care unit gave me a new outlook on life.
I appreciate all aspects of life, the highs, and the lows. I’d spend my final decade with those I love and who love me. Then, I’d write and shoot as many films as possible, knocking things off my bucket list.
