We recently connected with Adriana Alvarenga and have shared our conversation below.
Adriana , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose by personal challenges and overcoming experiences that led me to be where I am today. I have faced several health trials which have shaped my decisions in what that very purpose could be for me. Baking was a way I found to escape all of the issues of my health. I have always loved being in the kitchen, cooking and baking has always been my passion. No matter what has come my way, I keep persevering in teaching myself that I can keep making cakes. I don’t want having cancer to be what will define my future, but alternatively my passion.
I found another stronger purpose in my cakes and thats by showing my love for painting. I taught myself a way I could do it with cakes. This new technique showed a new purpose in my cakes, and in myself I found a new inspiration. Life has a way of showing you new paths as you move along. I feel such a strong fulfillment in my work and it only motivates more to become even better. I want to take my purpose and inspire others who want to learn more about cake making.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am cake artist currently living in canyon country, California. I live with my husband and two girls who I love and I adore. My husband is my backbone and he supports everything I do. I have survived two death experiences, including cancer. I am currently doing treatments to get better. My health has always something to keep battling with , but I like to keep moving forward and not emphasize on anything negative.
I want to bring sweet smiles to everyone with my cakes and a pure enjoyment with my cake flavors.
I am focusing on my cake flavors and learning new techniques for cake designs. I have experience in doing alcohol based cakes. My top seller cake is my very own delicious pink champagne cake, and also my tequila lime cake. I love making all style of cakes but my favorite would be the painted style cakes. I find this style unique and there’s so many ways to incorporate in a cake design.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three impactful pieces to my journey were
1. Organization / planning
Baking is all about planning and organizing your weeks ahead of time. I find that this helps with less stress and more time to be creative.
2. Baking techniques.
The baking basics are always helpful to be able to do multiple cakes and execute each one. Especially with big cakes
3. patience.
This is my hardest quality i learned but with time I did learn that not only being patient with the day to day of baking but being patient with myself. This helps me take time with daily operations of the bakery.
My advice would be to plan things ahead of time and to not be afraid to fail. Baking and being creative can at times be challenging. Trying new things to keep your baking techniques going is a great way to challenge yourself and learn. This is a great way to improve your skills as well, and if you fail, you learn and try again. It is important to also take breaks whenever possible to give yourself time to go back and try again. baking becomes a fun experience with each order I have received.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle I have faced is my health. At times is challenging to be physical and do certain movements around; or the medicine makes foggy and forgetful , weak at times. Time and physical therapy is the best way that’s helped me to heal. I have recently found that taking a few days to rest my body helps me the best to recover. I always want to help all my customers, and I want to say yes to every order. Though sometimes is hard to say no. I have learned to say no and take less orders I can make . This helps me keep going and be steady with my everyday. I love what I do and want to do it for as long as I can. To keep progressing in my work as a cake artist and learn new things.
