Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adrielle Reina. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Adrielle, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose between the pages of books— in worlds different than my own. As soon as I could read, I knew I wanted to write. And I did. Mostly for myself as I pursued other career paths. It wasn’t until I was let go from my previous job where it shouldn’t have been a risk that I realized that no matter what industry you’re in, you can always run into unforeseen circumstances that can lead to undesirable outcomes. And I thought, well, if I did everything I was supposed to do—go to college, graduate, and work just to be met with losing my job and struggling, then why can’t I do what I love, anyway?
So, I pursued my true purpose.
Storytelling.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a storyteller. Ever since I began reading at a young age (four, to be exact), I knew that’s what I wanted to do.
Books build connection, enable empathy, and provide foundations for knowledge and literacy. I had a rough upbringing when I was younger, which eventually led to my adoption. Books were my escape and allowed for me to be other people in different worlds. They made life less isolating and I knew that I wasn’t alone.
I write in different genres because I’m passionate about all kinds of stories, though I’m primarily a horror, sci-fi, and (dark) fantasy author. I’ve always seen these genres as vessels for important commentary and I hope that what I write sticks with people who do end up reading my books.
Also! My debut novel is releasing in February through Graveside Press. It’s a dystopian horror set in Appalachia titled, “A Ballad of Inferno and Ruin.”
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience, perseverance, and tenacity. In this industry, there will always be rejection. You must keep going and have that grit and belief in yourself that your story is worth telling.
The best thing you can do is keep improving your craft—practice every single day and integrate yourself into the community you want to be a part of. For example, in the writing community, other writers are your peers. Not your competitors.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I get overwhelmed frequently. I’m autistic and life can be overstimulating in a myriad of ways. What helps me is giving myself time to rest and recharge. I’ve gotten better at telling people no. I will put on music, watch something comforting, read, walk away from overstimulation, and break down tasks in lists and make them smaller and more manageable for me. It helps to also be on schedule and routine in some capacity.
