Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Agnes Molander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Agnes, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Work ethic for me is not constant and the hardest part to keep putting in the work when there’s lack of motivation. At those times it might be hard to remember why I want to put in the work. What has really helped me is setting up goals, at the time I do it monthly. I am trying to set realistic goals so that I actually can complete them and feel good about that. So if there’s a month with lack of inspiration and motivation as long as I have completed my goals that is enough. And if there’s a month filled with inspiration and motivation I’ll probably accomplish even more than the goals i put up that month. This helps me see that I actually get things done and it keeps me going.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a swedish actress, I discovered acting pretty late in life at age 21 but it became an instant passion. Without ever trying acting before I auditioned for an acting school in Sweden, just being in that atmosphere and stepping into somebody else’s shoes opened something in me I had never experienced before. I did not excpect it but I was accepted and thats’s whn my journey stated. Acting is allowing me to explore my own mind, other peoples mind and different point of views on the world and life. I feel like I’m more present while acting then I am in real life and it’s really cool. Every time I’m acting in a scene the world outside stops and the scene is my only reality and focus.
I started out in theatre and a lot of physical exercises to get to know my body wish has also been a very important part for me both professional but also in life. You could say I’ve gotten a professional relationship with my body and I really love my body as a college and tool tho I still might have issues with body image in private. I love the process in theatre, building the scenes and the show. When it’s a small production and you do everything together, costume, design, music, all of it. As a team, it’s just beautiful to create. Now a days my main focus is acting in film. I studied at New York Film Academy to immerse myself in acting for the camera. I wanted to learn American techniques. I had a beautiful year in school and stayed for a while after to work as an actress, as we all know the competition is high and never ending but I managed to get enough jobs to pay rent and food. And I learnt a lot along the way.
I have been in many short Films that has been screened at Film Festivals all over the world and I have received awards and scholarships for my acting through the years. Most recently at Gothenburg Film Festival as the main character in the film “Strange new world” and another short Film I’m in is screening at Malmo Queer Film Festival. I also do some commercials, but mostly so I can get money to afford to do the projects that I love.
About filmmaking, for me it’s just like with the theatre, I love the process. I love being on set I love solving scenes in weird and funny ways “How do we get the windows to open themselves” or the photographer squeezing into a car to get the best shoot, or driving with the trunk open to shoot someone on a bicycle. Seeing what happens behind the scenes is just amazing. I love seeing the team work.
Next week I have two castings coming up for really exciting projects, see you somewhere in 2025.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important thing is to really put yourself out there, force yourself to do the scary shit. Don’t be afraid to take space and just do it. All of these are cliches but it’s all so true. To get somewhere you actually have to keep moving forward how else are you suposed to go from one point to another? I think a great way to do this if you, like me, are having a hard time to take space and are scared of being too much or step on somebody else’s toes.
Move to a place where nobody knows you and just fake it til you make it. Start you new life from day one and just pretend you have the best confident and put yourself first. Believe me, I’ve tried, and it worked.
By this I don’t mean that you should be selfish or a diva. Just that the best way to learn is to challenge yourself and if you put others before you you’re gonna end up giving too much energy into their journey instead of your own. The people around you has to find their way too and it’s not up to you to create it for them. If you are surrounded by people that are just as motivated as you all of you will gain so much from each other and live in an incredibly inspiring environment, so take advantage and enjoy that!.
– Don’t be afraid to try or to fail, just do and fail and do again.
– Be spontaneous and open minded
– Have fun and find friends a long the way that support you and cheer for you, and cheer back at them!
– You’ll be rejected 50 times before you book a job in acting, and that’s not because your not good enough, you just didn’t fit the part.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They have supported me my whole life what I’ve chosen to do they never once said that I should “get a real education” or something like that. Ever since I was a child and said I wanted to be a singer they have always cheered on me and when I found acting they just continued and have always been invested and interested in what I’m doing.. It has made me feel very safe and I think it also has made me brave.
Many of my friends and others in the business struggle with their family not supporting their choice of working in film.
