Meet Agnes Traynor

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Agnes Traynor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Agnes, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I had never considered myself as a particularly creative person but now I feel that the years I have spent styling plants has, in fact, allowed me to channel my creativity . The design element wasn’t necessarily there at the beginning when I was still learning about plant care and how plants respond to different indoor environments. This skill eventually evolved to pairing plants with various planters and using the pairings to elevate a given space. I opened my plant shop in February of 2022 with the idea of having a space to showcase my designs and present different ways one could style plants within their space. The cozy shop is filled with various hanging plant displays, wall planters and propagation stations to encourage folks to get creative within their spaces and have fun with their plants as well. The possibilities of creating with plants are truly endless and I really enjoy learning new ways and displaying them in the shop.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of indigro plant design located in Takoma Park, Maryland, a plant shop and design studio focused on helping people learn about their houseplants and how to best incorporate plants in their spaces. I encourage people to survey their indoor spaces and bring photos when they come in to shop for plants. I also offer general care consultations and repotting services.

A new & exciting development is the addition of a new workshop space which will be used to host a variety of classes and events beginning this Fall. Classes will include terrarium building, green wall design, propagation tutorials in addition to plant care clinics. I really wanted to create a beautiful classroom space that the local creative community could use and am excited about it’s completion.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I really enjoy meeting and talking with different people, finding a common connection and of course, nerding out on plants. Life has taught me resilience and to just go with the flow which as allowed my business journey to evolve organically. If I had to give advice it would be to have an open mind and be mindful of opportunities.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking to collaborate with local makers that would be interested in teaching classes as well as potters who would like to sell their planters in my shop. I would also love to hear from people that are skilled in particular plant craft such as terrarium building or plant mounting that could potentially bring a new level of creativity to the shop,
