We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ahmad Fielder a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ahmad with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe I get my work ethic from multiple experiences and family members. First, I would say I developed it from my mom, who sacrificed a lot to make sure her children could grow up to be successful in life and pushed through some trials and tribulations while still having a good time. Another person that comes to mind is my uncle, who’s currently trying to balance a full-time job and trying to operate a local tea shop at the same time. I also read many self-improvement books during my free time, such as The Big Leap, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, and Slight Edge, which gave me a different perspective on navigating life. These people helped me realize that no matter how challenging the circumstance is, you can embrace and relish the journey. A quote I read not too long ago stuck with me and relates to the topic of work ethic: “Most great people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Color Designer in the footwear industry, a visual artist, and a musician/beatmaker. Ever since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by the arts, music, and footwear. These interests keep me going every single day. During my creative journey, I wanted to find ways to get involved in all three fields and share my work with people who could resonate with or get inspired by it. There’s also been a willingness to develop meaningful and impactful concepts that speak to me or anyone who loves art. A great example is creating the idea of my latest concept instrumental album, ‘UltraViolet.’ This album pays homage to my step-grandfather, who admired old school Funk & Soul, sci-fi, and Prince. These were the sounds that were always playing when I was a child. Another example is creating color concepts and mood boards at my job that could shed light on history many people need to know. I also merge my music and art design, crafting a mesmerizing visual. I aim to immerse people in a rhythmic and abstract experience that will undoubtedly set their heads in motion and keep them grooving.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, I believe the three qualities that were most impactful are networking, having grit, and being kind. Networking is extremely pivotal early in the process because you could learn so many things from someone in the field you’re trying to establish. They also help you secure a role down the road or share your name with others that could change your life. It’s best to show face, share your work, and show who you are as a creative even if you’re introverted like myself. Having grit is vital because you can overcome adversity and develop resilience along the journey. Setbacks are inevitable, but developing grit helps you build strength and character. That mentality allows me to put things into perspective and get back up. And lastly, being kind is important because you create a positive image and reputation. I’ve learned that kindness can take you to many places and rooms you couldn’t imagine.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, It would be a pleasure to collaborate with more artists in the foreseeable future. I would love to collaborate with other soulful/lofi producers and record labels with similar sounds and tastes. International artists also inspire me because they bring a unique perspective to many genres. I can also absorb/learn their music’s different sounds and textures. I’ve worked with friends and artists from various countries, which taught me many things about being a recording producer. So, It would be an excellent experience for me to partner with other artists worldwide.
