We recently connected with Ahmani Dawson-White and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ahmani, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a deeply personal and introspective process. It started with my own experiences and witnessing the injustices in my community as a Black, lesbian woman. The devastating effects of gun violence and crime ignited a passion within me to pursue law and justice. I recognized that I had the opportunity to create change and inspire hope in others. Through my education and engagement in social activism, I began to understand the power of my voice and actions. As I immersed myself in the study of law, criminal justice, and public policy, I realized the potential to effect meaningful change and promote fairness and justice for all. Additionally, my involvement in volunteering, mentoring at-risk youth, and collaborating with organizations focused on social issues allowed me to see firsthand the impact I could have on individuals and communities. Ultimately, it is the combination of personal experiences, education, and a deep sense of empathy that has guided me toward my purpose—to empower others, foster equality, and advocate for a better, safer world.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Ahmani Dawson-White, and I’m thrilled to share my story with you. I’m a paralegal who obtained my bachelor’s degree from Kennesaw State University in Integrative Studies with Concentrations in Criminal Justice and Modern Language and Culture. Currently, I’m pursuing a master’s degree in Public Administration at Clemson University, furthering my knowledge in law and public policy.
From a young age, I discovered my passion for singing. It seemed as though I learned to sing before I could even speak. Music has always been an integral part of my life, and I relish in using my musical expression to impact the lives of others. There’s something incredibly powerful about the way music can touch hearts and uplift spirits.
In addition to my professional pursuits, I’m fortunate to have a loving partner by my side. I am married to Anna White, and her unwavering support and companionship have been a source of strength and joy throughout my journey.
While I originate from the small town of Peoria, Illinois, I’ve spent a significant portion of my life in or near Atlanta, Georgia. That’s why I consider myself a Georgia Peach at heart. The vibrant culture, diversity, and warmth of the community have greatly influenced who I am today.
Currently, I hold the position of Director of Business Development for Hagen Nares Trial Law. This role allows me to combine my legal expertise with my entrepreneurial mindset, expanding the firm’s reach and making a positive impact on our clients and the community.
Growing up, I was raised in a very religious family. While their views often clashed with my own, I embarked on a personal journey to seek out my own spiritual path. Through this exploration, I discovered freedom, abundance, and love that resonated with my soul.
Being an avid servant leader is something that deeply resonates with me. I have a strong desire to serve others and make a meaningful difference in their lives. Whether it’s through volunteering, mentoring, or contributing to social causes, I’m dedicated to being of service to those in need.
One thing people often say about me is that I never meet a stranger. I have a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life, and I believe in the power of building genuine connections and friendships. It brings me great joy to make others feel seen, heard, and valued.
I’ve faced my fair share of adversity throughout my life. From mental health challenges to physical health issues and even experiences with domestic violence, these obstacles have shaped me into the resilient person I am today. It’s through these trials that I’ve learned the true meaning of strength, perseverance, and the importance of seeking support from loved ones and professionals.
In all that I do, my ultimate goal is to spread love and light. I believe that by combining law and art, we can create a safe space where these two intersect. It’s my dream to establish a platform where individuals can explore and express themselves freely while advocating for justice and equality.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me better. I’m excited to continue my journey of making a positive impact, uplifting others, and creating a world where love and justice thrive.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, there are three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have been most impactful in shaping my path:
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks and face challenges head-on has been crucial in my journey. My advice to those starting their journey is to cultivate resilience by embracing a growth mindset. See failures as opportunities for learning and growth, and never lose sight of your goals. Surround yourself with a support system that uplifts and encourages you. Remember that setbacks are temporary, and with perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle.
Continuous Learning: In the fields of law and activism, knowledge is power. Constantly seeking opportunities to expand your knowledge base and skill set is essential. Stay curious and never stop learning. Whether through formal education, professional development, or self-study, strive for growth and improvement. Engage with mentors, seek out diverse perspectives, and stay informed about current issues. Embrace a lifelong learning mindset, and never underestimate the power of knowledge in driving meaningful change.
Empathy and Compassion: The ability to connect with and understand others’ experiences is crucial in creating change and fostering inclusivity. Developing empathy and compassion allows us to advocate for justice and equality with genuine understanding and care. My advice is to actively listen to others, embrace diverse perspectives, and challenge your own biases. Engage in meaningful conversations, seek out different viewpoints, and educate yourself about the experiences of marginalized communities. Cultivate empathy and compassion, and let them guide your actions and decision-making.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace these three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge:
Seek opportunities to build resilience by embracing challenges, learning from setbacks, and surrounding yourself with supportive individuals.
Make continuous learning a priority. Invest in your education, stay informed, and pursue personal and professional growth.
Cultivate empathy and compassion. Listen, learn, and seek to understand the experiences of others. Let empathy guide your actions as you strive for justice and equality.
Remember, the journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the process, be patient with yourself, and stay true to your passion and purpose. Trust that with resilience, continuous learning, and empathy, you can create meaningful impact and make a difference in the world.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The person who has been most helpful in helping me overcome challenges and build the essential skills, qualities, and knowledge I needed to be successful is my mother. She has been my biggest inspiration, guiding light, and unwavering support throughout my journey.
My mother battled chronic illness for her entire life, yet she remained selfless and always put others before herself. Her resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit have been instrumental in shaping who I am today. Despite her own struggles, she instilled in me a strong sense of empathy, compassion, and the importance of helping others.
From a young age, my mother encouraged me to embrace my passions, pursue education, and stand up for justice. She taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and the power of resilience in the face of adversity. Her unconditional love and belief in my abilities have given me the strength and confidence to overcome challenges and strive for success.
In addition to my mother, I’ve also had the privilege of being surrounded by mentors, teachers, and friends who have played significant roles in my development. Their guidance, wisdom, and encouragement have been invaluable in shaping my skills, qualities, and knowledge.
To those who are fortunate enough to have someone like my mother in their lives, cherish their support and wisdom. Embrace the lessons they impart, and let their love and guidance propel you forward. If you don’t have a direct figure like my mother, seek out mentors, teachers, and role models who can provide guidance and support on your journey. Surround yourself with positive influences who believe in your potential and are willing to invest in your growth.
Remember, success is not achieved in isolation. It is built upon the support and wisdom of those who have come before us. Be grateful for those who have helped shape your path, and pay it forward by being a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Together, we can uplift and empower one another to reach our fullest potential and create a better world.
