We recently connected with Aidai Garnelo and have shared our conversation below.
Aidai, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I think my confidence and self-esteem comes from all that I have accomplished in my career and in my personal life. I have overcome stigmas and prejudice views growing up as a brown girl in a single-parent home. That, in itself, made me want to do better and prove to myself that I am capable. And I think I’ve done a pretty good job about it.
I went from being a young adult without knowing what career path suited me best to being a successful and experienced artist in my field of work.
My family, friends and clients have been the best support team thru it all. From my daughter overlooking and admiring me while I work and create art. To my clients boosting my confidence when they keep me booked and say the sweetest things like “You’re the best “, “Perfect!”, “I could never let anyone else touch my brows”, and my favorite, “You’re a true artist.”
It’s the little things that remind me why I love what I do and give me the confidence and self-esteem that reflects in all aspects of my life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I recently celebrated being part of the beauty industry for 9 years. I currently offer lash and brow services full-time at Chic Lash Boutique and have recently joined the market scene, again, offering henna art.
I am currently doing a market in the Heights area every other weekend but plan on adding more to my calendar as the weather gets warmer. You can find all the details of when and where I’ll be on my Instagram page @aidais_artistry.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First and most importantly, love what you do! You have to absolutely and truly enjoy what you do to exceed. I don’t ever wake up dreading work.If you don’t know what that might be, let curiosity lead the way. Let yourself wander into spaces that interest you.
When you’ve found your passion, stay consistent and put in the time. You have to remember that small progress leads to bigger success. If you ever feel like you’re derailing from your path, take a step back and take it all in and remind yourself of all that you’ve already accomplished.
Most importantly, be patient. Be patient with time and yourself. Enjoy the journey.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
With the economy shifting and making everyone feel uneasy it can be a bit difficult to bring in clients for a luxury service. I am finding myself posting more often on my social media pages to attract clients. Making sure to appeal to both, salon and market clients alike.
