We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aimee/natalie Kaplan/roehrs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aimee/Natalie below.
Aimee/Natalie, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
We stood under the bare frame of the 49×98 tent and surveyed the space in front of us overlooking the marina. After months of planning and preparation, it was time to bring everything together and make magic. Over the course of the next six hours we managed the installations: the decor company draped the ceiling of the tent with flowing white fabric and hung three humongous crystal chandeliers, the rental company delivered furniture, tables, chairs, and bars, and the floral team delivered three 10ft white cherry blossom trees, hundreds of candles, and rows upon rows of arrangements filled with baby’s breath, delicate white roses, and anemones. The catering company placed the linens, plates, and flatware, stocked the bars with glassware, and began preparing a thoughtfully curated menu. Details were reviewed and every seat received a place card and monogrammed bow, champagne flutes were filled and tagged with guest names and table assignments, and candles were lit. The bride and groom stepped through the gate in the white picket fence and surveyed the property, beaming. Soon the property was bustling with excited guests, eager to celebrate an amazing couple on their special day.
Seven years ago we decided to take a risk by turning our passion for planning events into a wedding planning business. As a Special Education Coordinator and Oncology Nurse, we had never worked together before outside of sisterly activities and neither of us had any idea how to take on the world of entrepreneurship. We did our research, worked hard, and turned our dream into a reality. We could have never foreseen the challenges we would face, especially when our first events took place during the COVID-19 pandemic. As our business continued to grow, so did our doubts and constant feelings relating to imposter syndrome. We were facing polarizing thoughts surrounding the joy involving weddings and the honor of being trusted by our clients, and the stress and self-doubt that came with larger scale events and comparing ourselves to our industry colleagues.
It took a lot of reflection and a shift in mindset to bring us from those initial stages to feeling confident in our ability to master a large, luxury tented wedding with many elements. Overcoming imposter syndrome was a critical step on our path to success so that we could manage multi-faceted installations with confidence and the knowledge we needed to ensure everything would operate smoothly.
While setting and achieving long term goals for yourself and your business are important, it is crucial to acknowledge your small achievements as well. We are admittedly our own worst critics and in the initial stages of entrepreneurship we attributed our success to luck. We recommend shifting your mindset to reflect on and celebrate each small step forward. Remember, you are putting in the hard work to make your success a reality.
Another way to overcome imposter syndrome is to create efficient and meaningful systems for yourself. Everyone approaches challenges differently and finding a system to set yourself up for success is key to tackling those challenges with your best foot forward. While we both have Type A personalities and pride ourselves in being multi-tasking wedding planning pros, it wouldn’t be possible without structured systems in place to keep us organized. From checklists to team meetings, colored coded calendars, and folder systems, our organization helps us focus on our goals and quiets self-doubt.
Our greatest key to success and overcoming imposter syndrome is our commitment to being lifelong learners. We understand that by focusing on growing and investing in our education, we will increase our knowledge and expertise. Remember that education doesn’t have to be expensive. Workshops, independent research, and networking are all opportunities to expand your understanding and hone your craft.
We successfully planned and orchestrated that tented wedding on the waterfront with precision, confidence, and a commitment to making everything perfect for our wonderful couple. As we continue to grow our business and plan personalized wedding weekends, we remind ourselves of the importance of finding balance within our work, growing as a team, and sharing our experiences to help others find success on their path. Repeat after us: I am capable of achieving any goal I set my mind to, with my expertise and unwavering determination, I will thrive and overcome any challenge.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a sister team and co-owners and event planners of Consilium Events. We discovered our love for event planning when we worked together to plan our own weddings. After helping family and friends with events we decided to take a leap and make the business official. The driving force behind our business is our passion for helping our clients and their closest friends and family to celebrate the most meaningful events in their lives. We pride ourselves in our ability to curate a customized, stress-free planning experience that ensures they can be fully present in their wedding weekend events. It is an honor to be chosen to provide our clients with such an intimate and personalized experience. We understand that every couple has a unique story and vision for their wedding day, and our goal is to bring that vision to life with seamless execution and thoughtful details. As sisters, we bring a warm, family-oriented approach to planning, paired with professionalism and trusted expertise. Our clients often become like family, and we cherish the opportunity to celebrate alongside them. Consilium Events is about more than just logistics and timelines—it’s about creating unforgettable moments and lasting memories. For us, nothing is more rewarding than seeing our clients relaxed, happy, and fully immersed in the magic of their wedding day.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
When we started Consilium Events, we didn’t imagine it would grow into what it is today. Our journey began with a shared love of planning, first for our own weddings, then for friends and family. Before long, what started as a passion became a business. Looking back, there are three key elements that made all the difference: adaptability, relationship-building, and attention to detail.
In wedding planning, things rarely go exactly as expected. Timelines shift, weather surprises you, and last-minute changes are inevitable. We quickly learned that adaptability is key—staying calm, thinking on our feet, and focusing on solutions turns challenges into opportunities. If you are looking to grow, we recommend you embrace every challenge as a chance to learn. The more experience you gain, the more confident and creative you’ll become.
For us, wedding planning has always been about people. Building strong relationships with clients and vendors has been essential. We take the time to get to know each couple, earning their trust and translating their vision into reality. Equally important is working with a network of talented, reliable vendors who share our values. We recommend focusing on communication and connection. Invest in your relationships—they’ll be the foundation of your success.
And finally, a seamless event is built on thoughtful details. Whether it’s a perfectly timed moment or cohesive design elements, these small touches create unforgettable experiences. Early on, we realized that mastering details while keeping an eye on the big picture would be one of our greatest strengths. It is critical to stay organized- develop processes that help you manage every detail while remaining flexible and prepared for the unexpected.
Growth takes time. Some of our greatest lessons came from unexpected challenges, but each experience made us stronger planners. Patience and persistence have been key to building our business, and we’re grateful for every step along the way.If you are starting on your journey: stay curious, be patient, and never lose sight of why you started. For us, it’s about love—our love for planning and the joy of helping others celebrate theirs.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the last 12 months, our biggest area of growth has been expanding our brand to take on larger-scale and luxury weddings. This shift has challenged and inspired us to elevate every aspect of our planning and design process. We’ve focused on curating more bespoke experiences, collaborating with high-end vendors, and refining our approach to meet the expectations of discerning clients seeking truly one-of-a-kind celebrations.
We’ve grown in our ability to manage more complex logistics and larger guest counts while maintaining the same personalized, detail-driven service we’re known for. It’s been an exciting evolution, and we’re proud of how we’ve adapted and positioned Consilium Events for this new chapter.
