Meet Airan Arellano

We recently connected with Airan Arellano and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Airan , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I draw my resilience from a childhood marked by challenges that ignited my determination. Originally from Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, my life took a significant turn at the age of 8 when I moved to the United States. This transition shaped the person I’ve become today, as I navigated hurdles and setbacks resulting from being an immigrant.

One of the defining moments was my quest to learn a new language. With no English-speaking family members, I embraced the challenge and even used a small 4 by 4 calculator to decode unfamiliar words. The experience highlighted the power of determination and adaptability, teaching me that perseverance in the face of unfamiliarity can lead to mastery.

Despite financial constraints that caused me to miss my first semester at the University of Houston, I emerged with a debt-free degree, proving that resourcefulness and hard work can triumph over obstacles. The journey not only enriched my education but also fostered unwavering self-belief.

The uncertainties around my immigration status didn’t deter my faith in the future. At 18, I confronted a lack of documents needed for routine activities like driving and working. This taught me that resilience doesn’t mean avoiding moments of doubt, but rather persisting through them, finding strength even in adversity.

Today, looking back on my journey, I’m grateful I never let setbacks define my path. My life underwent a profound transformation just 8 years ago when I received my work permit, fueling my excitement for what lies ahead. As a testament to new business owners, my story underscores the value of tenacity, adaptability, and faith in oneself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Adaptability will be one of the qualities that has been most impactful in my career and life. The ability to adapt to new situations and challenges has been crucial. In the dynamic world of real estate, circumstances can change rapidly. Being flexible and open to learning new approaches is essential. To develop adaptability, I suggest embracing change with a positive mindset. Seek out opportunities to learn from different experiences, whether through networking, workshops, or simply stepping out of your comfort zone. The more you expose yourself to diverse situations, the more adept you’ll become at navigating them.

The second quality will be communication Skills. Effective communication is paramount in the real estate field, where you interact with diverse clients, stakeholders, and professionals. Clear and concise communication builds trust and helps in negotiating deals. To improve communication skills, practice active listening and empathetic understanding. Regularly engage in conversations that challenge your ability to convey information accurately and genuinely. Learning to adapt your communication style to different audiences will set you apart.

The third one is not a quality but an area of knowledge which is mastering your market knowledge. Understanding the real estate market inside out is indispensable. Knowledge of trends, neighborhoods, pricing, and regulations empowers you to make informed decisions and provide valuable insights to clients. To develop this knowledge, immerse yourself in industry news, research local markets, and keep learning about changes and updates. Attend seminars, webinars, and industry conferences to stay updated and continuously expand your expertise.

For those at the beginning of their journey, ,my advise will be to embrace a growth mindset. Recognize that challenges are opportunities for growth. Approach each obstacle as a chance to learn and develop new skills. Embracing a growth mindset will fuel your motivation to continually improve.

Remember, every step of your journey contributes to your growth. Embrace challenges, learn from experiences, and always strive to enhance your skills and knowledge. With perseverance and a commitment to self-improvement, you’ll navigate your path to success in the world of real estate.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
Focusing solely on strengths can lead to a skewed perspective. It’s like building a sturdy house on a weak foundation—while the visible structure may appear strong, underlying weaknesses can jeopardize its long-term stability. By addressing areas of weakness, you create a more solid foundation for your overall skillset, which in turn enhances your ability to tackle complex challenges.

However, the goal isn’t to achieve equal mastery in every skill but rather to achieve a functional level of competence. This well-roundedness can make you more adaptable, versatile, and equipped to handle diverse situations.

In my real estate journey, I initially focused solely on my strengths—being knowledgeable about the market and having excellent interpersonal skills. However, I realized that my lack of expertise in data analysis was limiting my ability to provide in-depth insights to clients. I made a conscious effort to improve my analytical skills, and it paid off when I was able to present clients with comprehensive data-driven recommendations, leading to more confident decision-making.

The key is to strike a balance. Invest time in refining your strengths while dedicating effort to developing weaker areas to a functional level. It’s about becoming a well-rounded individual with the capacity to adapt, learn, and grow consistently. By doing so, you’re better equipped to face the challenges and complexities of both your professional and personal endeavors.
