We were lucky to catch up with Aisha Mowrer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aisha, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I feel like this is something I am always working on developing. I definitely have days where I give myself credit for the hard work that I put into all that I do. When I find myself lacking confidence, I lean into bravery. I challenge myself and more often than not I am pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I try to remember when comparing myself to others that we each bring something special and unique to the table so I should bring it!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Aisha, “A. Facepainter” from York, PA! I am a very hard-working, single mom proudly raising a beautiful 15-year-old daughter. A few years ago I was working in banking and a friend was looking for something different to do for her daughter’s birthday party. I thought about all of the times I had painted my daughter’s face for Halloween or a school spirit day and decided to volunteer to Facepaint at the party. I had a blast and several people approached me about painting at their events. I decided to reach out to the local market house and offer Face painting by donation. I wanted to make sure that every child that wanted to be painted was able regardless of their parents financial status. I still operate under this principle today. I quickly realized what an incredible service I could provide to the community with my art. Each time I got to hold up a mirror and experience a huge grin or hear parents in line fondly remembering their own first Face painting I knew I needed to keep doing this work.
I suffer from major depressive disorder and in 2022 I got burn out after a 10 year career in banking. I had just purchased my home and my whole world came to an unexpected halt. I lost my job and felt very unsure of where to turn. Despite my state, I had scheduled some face painting events and did not want to let children down. Each time I made it to an event I was rewarded with beautiful moments and so much joy! I continued painting for donation as often as I could and began to build a name for myself in my area. I started to have people reach out asking me to paint for their events and parties! As I humbly accepted, I saw my path begin to illuminate. Today I am proud to say that I am facepainting almost every weekend! I am so thankful to have found this joyful role that I am honored to fill.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As an artist, having the confidence to put myself out there has been a huge help. I want to share my gifts and I’m committed to trying to do that in this lifetime.
Sometimes you have to be willing to take risks. I learned that no matter how well I plan, things may go awry. It’s more important to be able to show up for yourself calmly in a pinch than it is to have everything perfect.
Knowing myself as well as I possibly can! If I am operating at full capacity then I can bring an incredible amount of creative energy to the table. I have to remember to care for myself and my body so I can keep shining as brightly as possible.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
I’m a very driven, independent person and I often shy away from asking for help. To combat this, I remind myself how good I feel when I am able to provide help to someone in any capacity. I also build connections in my life with people who I feel have my best interest in mind and want to see me succeed. Having trusted individuals around you makes asking for help much easier.
