We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aja Allen-Abraham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Aja, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Reflecting on my childhood, I am grateful for the amazing parents I had. They always encouraged me, supported me, and stood by my side through all the ups and downs. Their unwavering faith in God and openness about their own struggles and challenges inspired me to develop resilience from a young age.
My father had a difficult upbringing in extreme poverty, while my mother overcame the challenges of teenage pregnancy. Both overcame their struggles, became bold in their faith in God, and came to be a great success stories! Their DAILY unshaken faith, perseverance, and determination taught me that no obstacle is too big to overcome.
As I got to know my parents as individuals, I realized that strength and resilience ran deep in their veins. I knew that if they could face adversity head-on and triumph, then so could I. That Blackamore-Allen blood coursing through my veins gives me a sense of unstoppable drive and determination to achieve anything I set my mind to!
Looking back, I 100% credit my success to the resilience that my parents instilled in me. Their guidance and encouragement propelled me forward and gave me the confidence to face any challenge head-on. I am forever grateful for the lessons they taught me, and I am proud to carry on their legacy of strength and perseverance.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As I reflect on my professional journey thus far, I realize that three defining qualities have been instrumental in my success: self-awareness, persistence, and the ability to network effectively. These traits have helped me understand my strengths, push through challenges, and build valuable connections in my industry.
One of the most crucial aspects of my success has been my self-awareness. Knowing who I am, what I stand for, and what I bring to the table has given me a competitive edge. By understanding my strengths and limitations, I have been able to identify opportunities for growth and take steps to improve myself continuously.
As a black woman, I have encountered numerous obstacles and setbacks along the way, but my ability to stay focused and committed to my goals has helped me overcome them. Whether it’s working long hours, pursuing new skills, or persisting through rejection, I believe that persistence is key to achieving success in any field.
Lastly, my ability to network has been crucial in building my career. By developing meaningful relationships with people across different industries and backgrounds, I have been able to gain new insights, access new opportunities, and build a strong support system. I believe that networking is a vital skill for anyone looking to succeed in their career, and I would encourage others to focus on building and nurturing their professional connections.
If I were to offer advice to someone just starting out on their professional journey, I would encourage them to find a mentor, guide, or someone who can hold them accountable as they grow. Having someone to turn to for advice, feedback, and support can make all the difference in navigating the challenges of building a career.
I would remind them to stay true to themselves. It’s easy to fall victim to imposter syndrome or self-doubt, but it’s important to remember that our unique abilities and perspectives are what make us valuable. When we remain grounded in our true selves, we develop the tenacity and self-assurance essential for success.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My father, Ronald Allen, was the best teacher I could have ever been given. He recently passed in September of 2022 after a short battle with cancer. In my 30 years of life I soaked up every ounce of wisdom that I could get from him. He was a loyal, hard-working, go-getter, just like I am. I carry him and his teachings in my heart daily.
My mother, Tonya Blackamore-Allen, who is the most beautiful spirit I have ever known. She stayed home when I was very young, and taught me so much. We’re so close and I go to her for wise counsel. She helps me, even today, become the best version of myself.
Last but never least, my amazing husband, Kelvin Abraham. To have a partner in life who is just as invested in your personal, spiritual, and professional growth is a huge blessing. He’s such a motivator, an innovative thinker, and an invaluable partner. I bounce so much off of him daily that I can say TWP would not be what it is today without him.
God truly blessed me with these 3 major influences and I’m forever grateful for them.
