We were lucky to catch up with Aja Dawson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aja, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from my perspective on challenges and growth. I’ve learned that setbacks are often opportunities in disguise, so instead of focusing on what went wrong, I look at what I can learn and how I can improve. I also draw optimism from my upbringing and the people around me—family, mentors, and colleagues who’ve shown me the value of perseverance and positivity. That mindset helps me stay motivated, encourage others, and bring energy to the workplace. I think we all have a path and purpose and being able to walk that path daily is a blessing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My entrepreneurship journey is rooted in vision, resilience, and community. With a deep passion for food and culture, I built Abeautifulife Jamaican Kitchen to be more than just a restaurant—it is a celebration of my heritage, creativity, and connection.
Every day, I navigate the challenges that come with being an entrepreneur: managing resources, adapting to changing markets, and constantly innovating to keep my brand fresh and relevant. Through perseverance, I expand my business into new experiences, from curated menus and events to brand collaborations and product development.
For me, entrepreneurship is not just about profit—it is about creating spaces where people feel welcomed, inspired, and part of something bigger. By blending cultural storytelling with business strategy, I continue to drive my brand forward while opening doors for others along the way.
Looking ahead, I am preparing to take the next step in sharing my culture on a larger scale, getting Abeautifulife Jerk Sauce onto store shelves in 2026. This milestone will bring authentic Jamaican flavors to more homes while extending the spirit of my brand beyond the restaurant.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are resilience, creativity, and adaptability. Resilience keeps me moving forward when challenges come—I don’t see obstacles as roadblocks but as opportunities to learn and grow. Creativity allows me to see beyond what’s in front of me and imagine new ways to bring culture, food, and community together. And adaptability helps me pivot quickly when things don’t go as planned, whether it’s a business challenge or a shift in the market.
For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to actively practice these qualities. Resilience grows when you push through setbacks instead of letting them define you. Creativity strengthens when you give yourself permission to experiment and take risks, even in small ways. And adaptability comes from being open to change, listening to feedback, and staying flexible enough to adjust your vision without losing your purpose.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has played a really important role in my development is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. What resonated most with me is the idea of pursuing your “Personal Legend”—that sense of purpose that calls you, even when the path is uncertain. As an entrepreneur, that message reminds me to stay faithful to my vision, even when obstacles appear, because every challenge is part of the journey that shapes me.
Another powerful nugget from the book is that the treasures we seek are often closer than we think. For me, that means I don’t always need to look outside for validation or answers; so much of what I need is already within me—my creativity, my culture, my community. Finally, the book emphasizes trusting the process and recognizing that the universe has a way of aligning when you commit fully to your purpose. That lesson has helped me stay optimistic, grounded, and open to opportunities as they unfold.
