Meet Akilah Walker

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Akilah Walker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Akilah below.

Akilah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found purpose through experience after being diagnosed with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. My symptoms increased and had worsen and I chose to fight back the pain with knowledge. After going through a month of painful symptoms I kneeled down in prayer, I was extremely weak and felt like I was going to pass out after not eating solids for 5 days. I had IBS and could only drink liquids. I was flipping through an old journal and came across a recipe and the only thing I had in my kitchen was grape juice. I managed to make it to the kitchen and as soon as I started drinking the grape juice I felt my blood oxygenated and I was no longer physically weak. That day was the day I decided I would become a phlebotomist.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a Certified Phlebotomist, licensed cosmetologist, and owner of Nyuki Hair Studio. I have 7 years of experience in Hair Rejuvenation and Restoration. I appreciate meeting new people at the events I attend. At these events I educate guest on the different types of hair loss, offering on site consultations with product recommendations for customers to their hair restoration. We just recently launched our wellness shop where herbs can be purchased by the ounce.

At Nyuki Hair Studio, we believe Hair growth starts within, and encourage our guest to schedule an initial consultation where we learn more about who they are. Their last physical, recently blood draw, what their daily routine is, how they are feeling, and the symptoms they’re experiencing are just a few questions we ask during our initial meeting.

We have been attending events in the St.Pete area and look forward to establishing a salon home to accept new guests.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Persistence, consistency and faith. Everything comes in Gods timing. I was told ‘We all should work within our grace’ and I truly believe and have witnessed God’s hand in my life as I walk confidently in my purpose, it’s not easy and at times I almost gave up but every time I would pray for God to increase my faith. Gods strength kept me persistent and consistent to see everything through.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

As my symptoms from Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder worsened, I decided to attend an event that created awareness about sickle cell disease. I purchased a book from a doctor who is diagnosed with sickle cell disease. Her name is Simone C. Eastman Uwan, her books ‘A Doctor in a Patients Body’ and ‘All Rise’ have given me courage to advocate for accommodations during school. And Therapy has held me accountable for continuing to build a sustainable lifestyle and still attain everything I’ve ever wanted.
