Meet Alan R Warren

We recently connected with Alan R Warren and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Alan R, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.

I think mostly what causes writer’s block comes from what’s going in the world around which includes our own personal lives. Quite often when you enter the world of writing or entertainment, in my case radio, a lot of noise develops around you. Some of it will be positive, some of it negative, even totally made up stories about you or your books! The best advice I can give is to avoid as much of the noise around you as possible as you’ll begin to lose your focus, start to respond to reviews and that takes you off target! Sometimes writers will even begin to change their writing to fit what they think they need to! Don’t lose your direction, continue to move forward

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I have had 38 books published by four different publishers as well as some self-published! My latest release is ‘Peace, Love,& Murder: The Charles Manson Story which cover the historical aspects of the 1960’s in San Francisco during the Hippie era and how Manson became a symbol for that era.
I have been the host of the popular radio show ‘House of Mystery’ which is heard on several stations including KCAA 106.5 F.M. Los Angeles and on podcast!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The primary thing that helps in any creative process is the ability to work well with others. Everyone has something great to offer, including yourself. In order to make the most of your work is to allow everyone to grow and do what they do best, and blend it together

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Best thing I can do is to get back to reality! That means doing something that is real, physical. For me it’s taking my dogs out for a long 5km walk! I’m lucky enough to live in a rural setting to do this, but that’s a very important thing to keep throughout your life! It’s something that brings you back down to the ground again, so to speak
