Meet Alana Moore

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alana Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alana, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

This is a great question and I’m more than happy to share my perspective (in hopes that it will inspire and encourage people). I was able to overcome the many challenges relating to mental health because of my foundation, which is faith. As a believer in Christ Jesus, there were a lot of times when the battle of the mind would overtake me completely, it appeared that there was no way out. So, I would pray, and even when I couldn’t, the posture of my heart would. I believed that my savior would deliver me, no matter how torturous it was, and sure enough, He did, because of my faith in Him.

I was diagnosed with bipolar at age eighteen and insomnia at thirty-two. I’ve had eight episodes within my thirty-seven years of living. As I reflect, these battles strengthened me and revealed that I had everything within to fight back and gain control over my life. I learned how to obtain consistency with balance, wellness, and stability by allowing myself to be processed while journeying through life, which enabled me to be well. Those many phases permitted the reconstruction of my thoughts and enabled me to filter out negativity in exchange for a better and more conducive thought pattern, which began to reflect in my life in all areas.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I recently published a book on August 29th of this year. It’s called “Faith and Manifestations: Overcoming Warfare Within the Mind” (It’s accessible on Amazon and Lulu platforms. I welcome you to look it up and read the book overview). This book is about mental health. I used some of my life stories and my faith as a representation to demonstrate how I overcame the many torturous battles psychologically. I felt compelled to write this book for those who are impacted within the mental health community and abroad and advocate for others who are suffering in silence because of fear, and lack of knowledge while being completely transparent about my struggles. Faith and Manifestations intends to break the stigmatized preconceived notion that is associated with mental health.

I’m the praise and worship leader at my church. I love to sing, it’s truly a gift from God. I’m preparing myself for travel in the coming year (from a transformational speaker perspective while incorporating the singing ministry aspect) that bring awareness across the world about mental health struggles and how to overcome them through the power of God within.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three most important qualities within my experiences are:
Faith- having hope and trust in the Lord.
Biblical Mindfulness- professing God’s word over your life and learning how to stand on His proven promises.
Spiritual Awareness- understanding the different postures as a believer and how to access life-changing results.

The best advice I can offer for those early on their journey is to be merciful to yourself. Each of us has a light within and sometimes it becomes dim due to adversities, but the key is to have faith, even if it’s the size of a mustard seed. Having hope, even the slightest bit can change your outlook and outcome, but you must believe. Your light within bares power and helps you shine bright and overcome situations even while you’re still coping because in your weakness lies strength and the ability to endure/withstand life’s difficulties.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was provide me with a solid foundation, rooted in morals and values that has transformed my life. They’ve always taught me that if I kept God at the center and forefront nothing would ever be impossible for me.
