Meet Alberto Alfaro

We recently connected with Alberto Alfaro and have shared our conversation below.

Alberto , thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Nothing motivates me more than someone saying I can’t do something because they couldn’t, and I have proved myself time and time again. I may not always get the biggest turn outs but I am consistent, confident, involved with my community, and loyal to my DJs and supporters. The biggest motivation to me is proving to myself that yes I can.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was born 1991 to immigrant parents who came to the USA in the 80s. I am the second born of three son’s and the first to achieve a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree soon after. I majored in Information Systems Management and am currently working as an IT contractor for Quanta Services Inc here in HTX.

Outside of my professional career, I was always pursuing a life in the underground music scene of Houston. Starting off in 2010 playing shows at the now closed Orbit Room, otherwise known as Axiom when it was a punk rock venue. In 2012 I had my first major breakthrough with an event called “PokéBASS” which was a collaboration event between many individuals including myself, my brother Alex, Tim Smith also known as PwnyBoy at the time, and the now Late Owner of The Orbit Room simply known as D.

My current company, Underground Syndicate Entertainment, was started as a spin off from another project I began with Jeffery Shylandin aka HardPsy Jeff known as HardPsy. HardPsy was started as an idea to bring out more psytrance and hard dance music out to forefront in attempt to bring more awareness to the genre’s. With U.S.E. the focus was a more inclusive experience and opening the door to other genre’s with a concentration on Hard Dance music. The goal is to provide a safe environment for all to flourish without trying to force club practices on our guest, and we always welcome new DJs to our stage to show us what they got!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I truly believe being involved with the community is the biggest strength any small business owners can have. No one likes a faceless entity, and being the face of your own organization is a better look than other’s perceiving your organization as just another company.

Interject yourself and be in the crowd. Don’t have VIP areas that separate your crowd. Unless that is your intention then by all means go for your ideas. I believe in inclusivity for all no matter who they were.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Capital has always been my low end. They say that you lose some, you win some, but they don’t tell you that it all comes at cost. When you are the one putting in all you can lose it all in an instant. I have a job and earn income to cover my needs but with the position of the economy the difficulty of keeping the show going is becoming a burden, thus resulting in less frequency of shows. Agents keep asking for more money and venues are less likely to work with a small business. The hurdles are getting taller as the American Dollar is becoming weaker. Supporting small businesses has become greater than ever!
