We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alberto Anaya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alberto, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in the values instilled by my teachers and, most significantly, my parents. My mother, in particular, has been a profound influence. From her, I learned the importance of commitment — a principle she emphasized consistently. She taught me to undertake tasks only if I am willing to wholeheartedly commit to them, giving my best effort. According to her, if you’re not prepared to invest your full dedication, it’s better not to undertake the commitment at all. This philosophy has become a guiding principle in my approach to work. I believe in the significance of integrity, responsibility, and delivering excellence in everything I do. My work ethic, therefore, is not just a personal trait but a reflection of the invaluable lessons and principles passed down from my mentors and family, shaping the way I approach tasks and responsibilities in both my personal and professional life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I work at Solvaudio (solvaudio.com). We are a one stop solution for filmmakers that offers creative and technical support for all your audio post-production and music needs.
Our work is featured on top-tier multimedia platforms, and our team consists of highly experienced industry professionals specializing in diverse areas. Together, we collaborate to ensure that your projects sound the way they deserve.
In a landscape where only major players (Disney, Universal, Warner Brothers, MGM…) seem to have access to substantial budgets for storytelling, the challenge for many remains significant. However, it’s precisely within these constraints that our passion for storytelling thrives. We’ve mastered the art of maximizing every dollar, squeezing creativity and impact from each cent. This financial efficiency allows us to bring narratives to life, narratives that might otherwise go unnoticed in the grandeur of big-budget productions.
Our mission is to bridge the gap, ensuring that compelling stories, regardless of the budget behind them, find their way to the audience. By doing so, we not only showcase our resourcefulness but also create a connection between the stories we tell and the hearts of those who experience them. It’s about proving that storytelling doesn’t solely rely on a hefty budget; it’s about ingenuity, dedication, and the unwavering belief that every narrative deserves to be heard.
In a world where financial constraints often limit storytelling opportunities, we pride ourselves on being the storytellers who defy those limitations, bringing narratives to life in ways that resonate with audiences and break free from the constraints of budgetary boundaries.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, three pivotal elements have significantly shaped my path: Musicianship, Audio and Music Recording/Production Skills, and the ongoing exploration of Business acumen.
Firstly, Musicianship has been the cornerstone of my journey. Delving into areas like playing by ear, mastering harmony, understanding orchestration, exploring counterpoint, and honing arranging skills has not only enhanced my musicality but has also given me a richer palette for creative expression. My advice to those starting their journey would be to embrace a holistic approach to musicianship. Dedicate time to understand the intricacies of each element, practice regularly, and seek guidance from mentors or resources that align with your musical interests.
Secondly, the technical side of Audio and Music Recording/Production Skills has proven indispensable. In the modern landscape, being adept with the tools of the trade is crucial. My suggestion for newcomers is to immerse themselves in the technical aspects of recording and production. Familiarize yourself with industry-standard software, stay updated on the latest trends and technologies, and, most importantly, practice hands-on. Building a strong technical foundation allows for more creative freedom and control over the final product.
Lastly, venturing into the realm of Business has been a revelation. Learning how to navigate the business side of the industry has been both challenging and rewarding. For those at the beginning of their journey, I recommend dedicating time to understand the business aspects of the industry. Explore topics like marketing, networking, and project management. Seek out mentorship from professionals who have successfully balanced the artistic and business sides of their careers.
In essence, my journey has been enriched by a well-rounded approach to musicianship, technical proficiency in audio and music production, and an ongoing exploration of the business facets of the industry. My advice is to approach your learning with curiosity, persistence, and a commitment to both the art and the industry that surrounds it.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who’s great at communication no matter if they’ve got the scene all figured out or they’re up for a creative journey.
If they know what they want, my dream client can toss over some accurate references, maybe from YouTube or Spotify. This helps us sync up and ensures we’re on the same creative wavelength.
For those who aren’t sure about the scene, my ideal client is someone who can spill the beans on their filmmaking and storytelling vibe. They share what’s crucial for the audience in that scene. That’s our starting point for a creative adventure.
In a nutshell, my dream collaboration involves breezy communication, whether they’re bringing a solid plan or we’re crafting it together. It’s all about effective communication and purposeful collaboration!
