We caught up with the brilliant and insightful ALDA ESCOBAR a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
ALDA, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
From traveling experiences with my mother and and the vision to give back to my country, Guatemala. I discovered this emerging passion complemented with the mission of creating an impact of fashion responsibility and creative lifestyle. I founded Madre Luna in 2017 to recognize the importance of heritage, high quality and craftsmanship. I want to support artisans towards economic independence by helping create social and economic opportunities through trading partnership with jobs and a Fair Trade model of business. In Madre Luna, we partner with cooperatives, small and independent artisans to help grow their businesses. My vision is to empower artisans, inspire and connect with people by becoming an influencer and educator specially supporting humanitarian rights and appeals.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My inspiration comes from Mayan culture. I currently design my collections in my studio in California. With a love and passion for unique accessories and leather crafting, it is our mission “To preserve each textile, design fabric, technique and production as an art form, we want to keep our heritage-tradition alive, this makes us rich in cultural history”. Each product has its unique story as the person who created it. We currently impact our community by a Fair trade model of ethical, environmentally conscious, and sustainable production that focuses on creating economic opportunities for disadvantaged producers. Madre Luna represents a community that believes that all people, regardless of their gender, race, and religion, deserve the opportunity to support themselves and their families through dignified work opportunities.
Today, we are working on expanding new collections and looking for more partnerships. Our goal in the future is to become a non-profit and a Bi corp. With every purchase, you are supporting meaningful income opportunities for artisans and their families. This makes a difference and creates a positive impact in our community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think my three qualities that were most impactful in my journey was experimenting with new methods in art and design. I always was interested in entrepreneurship and how to become a small business owner. Looking into a mission and a purpose, I wanted to have a mission on helping people. And my last skill is to research and study on how can I do all these to achieve my goals, and this was by researching, consulting and creating partnerships.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We’re committed to building long-term relationships with, and creating opportunities for, artisan communities, especially women. We are looking for collaborations that share the same passion and mission. If you are interested in collaborating with Madre Luna, contact us at madreluna.atelier@gmail.com.
