We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aleasa Word. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aleasa below.
Aleasa, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my parents. My mom and dad met when they were both working at an inpatient mental health facility. Working in that type of environment was tough. They both were state employees and eventually veered off into different paths. Once in other areas, my dad became a radio DJ. My mom picked up a career in banking. Eventually they both ended up going back to state jobs. After working in juvenile corrections for a while, my father evnetually became the Chief of Bailiffs for Court Security in the Court of Common Pleas in Delaware where he eventually retired from. My mom worked at the women’s prison for a while and then became an investigator for the Department of Labor in Delaware.
I never saw my parents NOT working. They got up each day and sometimes my dad even picked up a second job for additional income when needed. My parents were not together; however, whether at my mom’s home or visiting my dad having a secure job and doing work around the house were top priorities to support growing families. They instilled a work ethic in me that sticks to this day. No matter what job you are in, it is your responsibility to be your best at it. They also made sure I understood gift that being healthy enough to hold a job was when others didn’t have that opportunity. Because my parents were “old school” as people say, they also believed in sticking to things and making a career that would provide for you during retirement.
Because of my mom and dad I didn’t know what “slacking” looked like. Over the years I worked in Corporate America in various roles with some in banking and some in investments. My own children saw me get up and go to work every day and I only took time off for vacation (because self care is important) and if I or one of them were actually sick. Even in the worst job, I did my best until I could find another job. In fact at one job I remember the attorney I worked for being so rude to myself and my colleague EVERY DAY! He even threw papers at me one time and would yell at us. I still put my best foot forward all while feverishly looking for another job so I could get out of a toxic environment.
I learned how people treat you at work is on them. How you act at work is on you. And if they don’t know how to treat you, you can leave but you don’t have to be an awful person because someone else is. You don’t have to stoop to their level. It is sad some people are that way, but don’t let anyone change you. Instead change your environment if need be but always do your best. You are working to secure YOUR future, so be good at it for you!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
By trade I am an Executive Coach certified in Emotional Intelligence Practice & Assessments as well as a Certified Trauma Support Specialist and Diversity Consultant. People often wonder how I can do all of those things at the same time and also serve as a workshop developer/facilitator. All of my roles fall under the umbrella of Emotional Intelligence. When we can be smarter with our emotions we can improve things like quality of life, effectiveness, well being, relationships, decision making, focus, motivation and so much more. When working with clients I have my trauma informed & cultural competency lenses on to be sure that I am seeing the person in their most holistic form. This is where change and growth begin becasue it allows me to show respect, build rapport and that builds trust. Whe a person trusts you they know you are helping them on a journey for their good.
Keep up with me on social media where my handle is @IAMMZWORD everywhere. I provide in depth emotional intelligence profiles, 360 Feedback assessments for those interested and can even produce a Brain Talent profile for individuals as well as dashboards for groups to grow their impact. I have a 6 week cohort coming up for women in early 2023 where we will focus on building a solid peer network and reignighting our passion for what matters most to us. I also have an on demand course for entrepreneurs, freelancers and solopreneurs to help them start their own personal branding journey on my platform AWord Academy.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who is usually the strong person. Behind their strength there exists a person who wants to improve their relationships, become more focused, improve motivation but sometimes their own fears or lack of support from their circles get in the way. They are often the strong loner who people forget about because they seem like they have it all together but they are winging it sometimes just like everyone else but they do it with pizazz. They need to learn their vulnerability is not a weakness but a stregnth to grow their teams, careers and family dynamics and ther is where I come in to help them. I help them become smarter with emotions and use them as power tools to improve relationships, qualify of life, personal and professional effectiveness and overall well being.
