We were lucky to catch up with Aleasa Word recently and have shared our conversation below.
Aleasa, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
For years I felt I didn’t measure up to others in the various industries where I worked or provided professional services because I did not have a college degree. After high school I went into the workforce and planned to go back to school after a year or so; however, that year or so turned into a few decades. Eventually I felt to get an further I had to go back to school. It took me a very long time to complete my first degree while working full-time. Once I graduated I was ecstatic. It was then that I realized my degree was a terrific accomplishment but it was not the ticket for making me belong in the circles I was already in. My hard work, resilience and willingness to learn were what got me to where I was. Now I help other people get through imposter syndrome and learn that they are enough and they deserve a seat at the table just like everyone else.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
For the rest of 2023 I am focused on reframing how I go to market. The marketplace is changing due to the economic issues many are facing. Some companies have tightened their belts as we go into the fourth quarter of 2023 as a preemptive measure to remain sustainable. I also know that people are stressed so I created a FLOW productivity group online where people can work with a budd or alone and stay more focused in today’s crazy world. It’s pretty cool with timers, reminders along the way and access to other coaches like me.
Also, I want to keep in mind that people are really feeling the impact of inflation and with the start up fof student debt repayments people are shifiting the focus of their wallets. My services are meant to help improve lives. I provide DEI training/consulting, leadership effectiveness coaching to organizations as well as personal coaching on effectiveness, confidence, well being, decision making, transitions and EI for everyone. Emotional Intelligence helps with everything and because it is considered a soft skills some think they don’t need it. The truth is it is we all need to and to grow it helps us with our careers, financial well being and personal lives. Emotional Intelligence helps to predict over 53% of the variation in leaders success according to a report by Six Seconds. That’s nothing to sneeze at. And in an economic dowturn or period of concern we all want to be more successful, make more money, have better relationships and improve our lives so we have to look at how we can do that. I can help! Yet at the same time I understand everyone’s priorities are different and therefore I am looking for better ways to go to market.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three things that were most impactful in my journey were patience, grit and humility. I’ve learned a lot and I’ve worked hard. I also understand my pace and the pace of others may be different and that is ok. Being self-aware is a skillset that takes time to grow. Learning to be aware when it comes to others is also a skillset and one that is gold once you start to work on it. It is not a one stop shop though. It is a process and patience through it all matters significantly. I’m still learning along the way and life has showed me many times that standing back, being humble and being open to embracing new things will take me far. These are lessons everyone could stand to embrace in their own unique ways.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with. I like to say I may not always be the one to open the door but when I walk in I will help you close it effectively. What I mean by that is, I love to speak. I love to help people find other ways of thinking and being in their own authenticity. Finding people who are looking for speakers to help change the game for their companies, whether small or large, their community organizations or even their social groups allows me a change to spread the gifts I’ve been given to help others grow and build.
