Aleeya, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Being the only one in the room who looks like me has been a recurring theme throughout my career, especially in the luxury retail space. Early on, I realized that my unique perspective was not a limitation but a strength. I learned to lean into my authenticity and use my voice to bring fresh ideas to the table.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to be unapologetically myself. I don’t try to conform to what others expect me to be. Instead, I focus on delivering value through my expertise, insights, and passion for what I do. When you’re confident in your abilities and clear about your purpose, it becomes easier to command respect and influence others, regardless of how different you may look or feel in the room.

I’ve also learned the importance of building alliances and finding mentors who believe in my potential. These relationships have been invaluable in helping me navigate challenges and amplify my impact. At the end of the day, success comes from staying true to yourself and never losing sight of the value you bring to the table.

My journey in the world of retail has been a fulfilling one, spanning nearly 20 years, with the latter half dedicated to luxury retail. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most iconic brands in the industry, from Coach to Net-A-Porter and Moda Operandi, where I helped shape consumer experiences and understand the nuances of luxury shopping. But it was after welcoming my son that I noticed a gap in the market—a lack of thoughtfully curated clothing and a decline in personalized service. That realization led me to found Nocca. Nocca is not just a luxury retail store—it’s a destination for individuality, connection, and effortless style. We are a community-driven space where fashion meets purpose, and every piece tells a story. At Nocca, we believe luxury is not defined by price tags or logos, but by the experience we create and the relationships we build.

I’m passionate about helping people discover clothing that makes them feel beautiful and empowered, while also supporting independent designers who bring creativity and craftsmanship to the table. We’ve reimagined the shopping experience to be deeply personal and inclusive. From complimentary personal styling sessions to white-glove delivery and alterations, every detail is designed to make our customers feel valued. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back on my journey, three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge have been absolutely pivotal to my success: resilience, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of consumer behavior.

Resilience
The luxury retail industry is fast-paced, competitive, and constantly evolving. There were countless moments when I faced setbacks, whether it was navigating being the only one in the room who looked like me or adapting to industry shifts. Resilience taught me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to keep pushing forward, even when things felt uncertain.

Advice for Early Professionals:

Cultivate a growth mindset. View failures as lessons rather than roadblocks.

Build a support system of mentors, peers, and friends who can encourage you during tough times.

Practice self-care and reflection to stay grounded and focused on your long-term goals.

Emotional Intelligence
Emotional intelligence has been my secret weapon in building relationships—whether with clients, colleagues, or designers. Understanding and empathizing with others’ perspectives has allowed me to create meaningful connections, foster trust, and deliver exceptional customer experiences.

Advice for Early Professionals:

Actively listen to others and seek to understand their needs and motivations.

Practice empathy by putting yourself in others’ shoes, whether it’s a customer, teammate, or mentor.

Develop self-awareness by reflecting on your emotions and how they influence your interactions.

Deep Understanding of Consumer Behavior
My ability to analyze and anticipate consumer behavior has been instrumental in shaping successful strategies throughout my career. Whether it was helping buyers at Moda Operandi or curating collections at Nocca, understanding what drives people to make purchasing decisions has allowed me to stay ahead of trends and deliver value.

Advice for Early Professionals:

Stay curious and immerse yourself in your industry. Read, attend events, and engage with your target audience to understand their needs.

Use data and insights to inform your decisions, but don’t forget the human element—fashion and retail are deeply personal.

Experiment and take calculated risks. Sometimes the best way to learn is by trying something new and seeing how it resonates.

My journey has taught me that success is a combination of hard work, adaptability, and a genuine passion for what you do. For those early in their journey, my advice is to stay true to yourself, embrace every opportunity to learn, and never underestimate the power of relationships. Your unique perspective and experiences are your greatest assets—lean into them, and don’t be afraid to carve your own path.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Feeling overwhelmed is something I think everyone experiences at some point, especially when juggling the demands of running a business, being a mom, and trying to maintain a sense of balance in life. Over the years, I’ve developed a few strategies that help me navigate those moments and regain clarity:

Pause and Breathe
When I feel overwhelmed, the first thing I do is pause. I take a few deep breaths to ground myself and create a moment of stillness. It’s amazing how much clarity a few mindful breaths can bring.

Prioritize and Simplify
I’ve learned that overwhelm often comes from trying to do too much at once. I take a step back, list out everything on my plate, and identify the top three priorities that need my immediate attention. Everything else can wait. Breaking tasks into smaller, manageable steps also helps me feel more in control.

Lean on My Support System
I’m fortunate to have a strong support system—my family, friends, and team at Nocca. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I reach out to them for help or simply to talk things through. Sometimes, just sharing what’s on my mind can lighten the load.

Disconnect to Reconnect
I’ve found that stepping away from my phone, email, and social media for a little while can work wonders. Whether it’s a walk on the beach, a yoga session, or just sitting quietly with a cup of tea, giving myself permission to disconnect helps me recharge and refocus.

Celebrate Small Wins
When things feel overwhelming, it’s easy to lose sight of how much you’ve already accomplished. I make it a point to celebrate small wins along the way—whether it’s completing a task, receiving positive feedback from a customer, or simply getting through a tough day. Acknowledging these moments helps me stay motivated and positive.

Advice for Others:
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that it’s okay to slow down and take care of yourself. You don’t have to have everything figured out all at once. Focus on what truly matters, ask for help when you need it, and give yourself grace. Overwhelm is often a sign that you’re pushing yourself to grow, and that’s something to be proud of. Just remember to take it one step at a time.
