We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alejandro Caiazza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alejandro below.
Alejandro , thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Personally, my way of keeping my creativity alive is first to research and read about other artists, but the most real thing for me is to do things looking for another way, to turn the painting over and continue painting, I am always active thinking about what other material besides paint can make me stand out or express myself better, so I collect objects from the streets that transmit something to me and I look to fuse it into a work, I keep my creativity constantly thinking about it, doing things backwards, many times, in my ordinary day if I have to go to the market, I choose another path, not the usual one, I always look to experiment in ordinary situations or when I am working on my art, every experience from the street or from the day I take it to the moment of creating, painting, etc.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I grew up in Venezuela, I started painting at an early age, my first solo exhibition was in 1999 at theSala de Arte de Sidor (Gallery), since then I have continued to grow as an artist,, I life in NYC but I have exhibited in Venezuela,Paris, Rome and Japan, recently at the MoCA (Museum of Cleveland) and currently I exhibit almost permanently at the Van Der Plas Gallery in NYC and at the Winston Scott Gallery in Warwick New York. At the end of September I will have a “solo” exhibition at the William Musto Cultural Center in Jersey City, in addition to an upcoming exhibition at the Van Der Plas Gallery where I will be presenting my new paintings, strongly influenced by Outsider Art, Primitive Art and Brut Art, exploring themes around s*x, violence, fun, animals, politics, everyday characters, and emotions such as love, madness and death.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The qualities that have helped me develop in my career have been Creativity, curiosity, passion for what I do, the Faith to believe in what I do and that my Artworks can have an impact or leave a mark on people, create a bond… an experience… a kind of emotional education… My advice for those who are starting out is to have Faith and Passion in what you do, believe in yourself and work hard for it every day, be in love with what you do, mainly with the process and then with the result and the rest

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
The challenge I am currently facing is almost the same as always, since my beginnings, it is to create a new piece that makes me happy at least in part or enough, the challenge of being able to enter the hearts or emotions of people through my art, the challenge that a work can always be and remain emotional, despite the time that changes everything.
