Meet Alejandro Catano

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alejandro Catano. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Alejandro, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

Hi I’m Alejandro Catano, but people call me Alex. I am a fellow local podcast host for Catanation Studios. While that is what identify myself as, I’ve done a lot growing up. I have written music, designed websites for movies and wrestling, worked in farms, take care of youth, and even worked as a barista for my first five years after High School. My work ethic comes from the idea of being a stand out. My father, Ricardo Catano, always had this personality that always stood out and people knew who he was. The way he presented himself in a way where if you saw him, you knew it was him. When it comes to what I do, I learned that I wanted to be known for me. Growing up, my dad did a lot of community work where people always knew me as Ricardo’s son. As honored as I am being Ricardo’s son, I always wanted to stand out as Alex Catano, most of my ideas aren’t always original, a lot of my ideas come from my love for movies, which is where I get most of my inspirations, however I don’t always want to copy and paste, however I want to create things in a way that feels original. I once read that every idea has been done before, but how do you make it your own, which is true, and that is where my work ethic comes from, it’s how I present myself and the work I bring to the world.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I work on a podcast recording local creators in San Diego named Catanation Studios. I’ve interviewed artists, muralists, actors/actresses, directors, musicians, local businesses, authors, non-profits, and all kinds of creative minds in San Diego, with some outside of San Diego. The idea came up during the Pandemic after my original radio show in college got cancelled, I got tired of waiting for the door to open, and I chose to create one. My original idea was to talk about movies and wrestling, however the viewership was not the greatest. During my time working at Cafeina Cafe, I met different people in the community with great stories, and given my past experience, I decided to pivot and make Catanation Studios a show highlighting all different stories of San Diego, and that is how Catanation Studios went on to become in my eyes one of the best podcasts in San Diego about to hit 5 years and counting.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Some of the most important skills I learned in the process is that not everything is easy. I can’t imagine how many people have come and gone if my life during my time working on the podcast, it was rough because sometimes business can get in the way of a good friendship, which is something I’m still working on. I am not going to close myself from opening up to people, that is not who I am, but I am more cautious of who I let in my life. Being humble is very important, don’t let anyone put you down, you are the only one that can make the decision of where your journey takes you. Take care of yourself first, I have worked on Catanation Studios for almost 5 years, and it drained me. Don’t be afraid to give yourself a rest and enjoy the little things, because those breaks can do a lot, and helps you be a better person now than who you were yesterday.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Ideally working with anyone in radio will help me get to a better opportunity to become a better radio host or radio engineer, but honestly I am currently always looking to collaborate with anyone who is opened to work with me. Everyone has a creative mind, and I know for a fact I’m not the best at everything, and I can always learn from anyone, that is been my main goal in life, learn as I go with what I see. It could be anything, even working in retail or youth, I feel there has always been a lesson to everything I’ve done, and it’s helped me become a better person.
