Meet Aleksandr Boikov

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Aleksandr Boikov. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Aleksandr below.

Aleksandr, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

When I created my first film, there were many haters around it because of the large budget and it being a major studio project. However, I was young, and there were many script mishaps. I had little experience, but I was brave and talented. It was enough to move mountains, but not enough to impress the audience. I received so much negative feedback that I’m sure it nearly put an end to my career. Fortunately for me, I moved on and created a hit just a few years later.

Haters can be divided into three main categories:

Simply rude people: “Your film is shit. You are shit.”

More aggressive and very angry: “I will burn your film. I will find you and burn you. Give me my money back for the ticket.”

The most painful: They said, “I waited so long for this film. I believed in you. Now all hopes are shattered. This is not the film I expected.”

The first two categories of haters weren’t a big problem for me. You develop a thick skin very quickly. But I was still weakly protected against those who believed in me. I was afraid of disappointing them. I tried to motivate myself when things went wrong, telling myself, “I will create something even more wonderful next time.” But only after I created something magnificent that received positive feedback did it become much easier for me to protect my self-esteem.

Those who are dear to you are the most dangerous people to your creativity. If someone from your classmates at the beginning of your creative journey says, “Your art is sucks,” it hurts. But not as much as when a relative says, “Maybe you should try something else?” They worry about you and try to protect you from disappointment, but instead they kill your dreams from the very beginning. Be careful because these people really know you and want to help, but they are not you. They don’t know exactly what you want.

There is a saying that has become my helper: “If you struggle for a long time, something will eventually work out.” Even if you don’t have natural talent, lack experience, or weren’t born to be a director, if you keep making films year after year, I’m sure that in 30 years you will make an excellent film. Talent just helps to shorten that path.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Creativity
hardy
Curiosity

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I know a lot about America and west pop culture and history but I still feel that people from US have more experience for storytelling. So I wanna find a scriptwriters with whom we can collaborate
