We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alesia Cîdă a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alesia, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Definitely, by consuming as much art as possible. Enjoying other creatives’ work brings me to a warm spot where I realize that I am part of a community, and my input is just as important. That pushes me and inspires me to continue making and develop my own practice.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I collect and interpret found materials according to the current area of interest I want to explore.
Starting point will always be the existing resources. I let them guide the process, while sticking with the chosen concept. The outcome is an ongoing negotiation between the items that I find in second hand shops and flea markets and my own expectations I set when starting the project .

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Perseverance, inventiveness and frugality.
Put on your tunnel vision, keep trying and believe in your practice. Don’t shy away from look at people above you and how they manage and how they do things. You don’t need a lot of money for a project, just pay attention to what’s already there and can be done and worked around it.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Not ever questioning my chosen path and being supportive straight away. They didn’t have a problem with me wanting to go to a vocational art high school and they nurtured my passion as much as possible by getting me extra art classes or buying me my first sewing machine at 13.
