We were lucky to catch up with Alessandra Saggese recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alessandra, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
First of all, I don’t see Interior Design only has a job. It is my hobbie and my passion. For me, traveling, art, nature are all sources of inspiration. I believe that one needs to feed their creativity, doing research, opening your mind or exploring new things. I once heard someone say “boredom is the cradle of wonder and creativity.” When you are stuck, bored, blocked, that’s when your creativity shoots up looking for new things.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am Alessandra Saggese, I am 33 years old and I was born in Caracas, Venezuela. Since I was little I have defined myself as a creative and extremely curious person. For me, being an interior designer is seeing my imagination come true. It is an indescribable feeling when you see your ideas materialize.
In 2019, when I decided to open Alessandra Saggese Design Studio, it was one of my dreams. My studio targets primarily residential projects and my focus is making unique, functional and aesthetic spaces for my clients.
I believe that interior design creates a personal relationship with your clients because you are inside their homes, so understanding their needs and tastes is essential to have a successful project.
We currently have 3 houses under construction and 3 apartments that are being remodeled. Alessandra Saggese Design Studio continues to grow along with my expectations and dreams.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If I had to summarize what you need to be a good Interior Designer in 3 skills I would say:
– Empathy to know the needs and tastes of your clients. You have to know how to put yourself in their shoes and approach the design from different points of view.
– Good relationships with your suppliers, contractors and everyone involved in the project. At the end of the day this is a team effort, we must all support each other and be respectful to make everything go well.
– Knowledge. Not only about codes and programs, but you have to move within the industry. Meet suppliers, stay up to date with trends, network with other designers. The more information you feed on, the better your approach will be when designing.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client would be someone who knows what they want, but lets themselves be guided. She has her wishlist and trusts that the designer will help her fulfill them. Participate in meetings, respect your work schedules and understand that we are providing a service in which both parties are interacting.
