Meet Alex Belville

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alex Belville. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alex below.

Alex, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I’ve loved movies since I was young and always knew I wanted to be part of the film industry. Early on, I dreamed of becoming an actor. But in high school and the years that followed, I lost my way—falling into addiction and making choices that took me off course.

When I turned my life around in my early-to-mid twenties, I found my purpose through storytelling. With a camera in my hand, I could express myself in a way I never had before. Sharing my own story helped me realize that my past mistakes weren’t just obstacles—they gave me life experience, empathy, and gratitude that fueled my passion for connecting with others and telling their stories.

I started out filming music videos for hip-hop artists and rock bands, then moved into weddings. That eventually led me to creating commercials for nonprofits, and now, I have the privilege of producing videos for brands of all shapes and sizes with my production company, Mirrorless Productions. I find so much fulfillment and purpose when a brand trusts my team and me to tell their story.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m a Wisconsin-based filmmaker who loves creating cinematic, story-driven videos for my clients. I work with a small but mighty team of three on most projects, and I’m proud that we handle every aspect of video production in-house—from scripting and shot lists to directing, filming, editing, and color grading. I’m incredibly grateful for the projects I get to work on. I’m a high-energy, go-go kind of guy, so I love that no two weeks are the same. One day, I’m filming a heartfelt nonprofit’s story in my hometown; the next, I’m traveling out of state to work with a brand like Tabasco or capturing the energy of a music festival like XRoads41 back home in Wisconsin.

One of the best parts of my job is getting a behind-the-scenes look at so many different businesses and brands. Some days, it feels like I’m filming an episode of How It’s Made—I get this inside look of how organizations operate, and I love that. My clients and their teams teach me so much, and it makes me a better filmmaker—and a better human. What makes this journey even more meaningful is that I get to do it while raising a family. My wife and I have five kids, and I take a lot of pride in building a business that not only supports us but also shows them what’s possible when you pursue your passion.

After 10 years in the industry, I’ve been so inspired that I recently launched my own YouTube channel, Alex Belville, where I share behind-the-scenes filmmaking moments, creative business advice, tech reviews, and more—all designed to help other creatives be bold and grow their businesses.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three words come to mind when I think about the last 10 years and what it took to get here: faith, patience, and drive.

You have to believe in yourself and trust that you deserve to make it—even when the path isn’t clear. There were so many moments early on when I had no idea how things would work out or where my next client was coming from. But I kept the faith that if I showed up, put in the work, and stayed in the game, opportunities would come.

I always say—chasing your dreams just takes longer than you think. It took me seven years from the moment I picked up a camera to land my first dream project. Success doesn’t happen overnight. You have to be patient, keep growing your skills, and make each project just a little better than the last.

At the same time, drive is everything. My foot is always on the gas because I want to be a better filmmaker, create stronger work for my clients, and make a bigger impact. I also dream of working with bigger brands and making a movie one day. It’ll happen—but only if I put in the reps today.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

It’s so important for creatives to know their worth—and early on, that’s hard. A supportive friend, family member, or loved one can make all the difference. For me, that person is my wife, Chelsea. We met just months after I started my business, at a time when I was hustling to land my first clients, grow Mirrorless, and figure out how to price my work. Those early years took a lot of grinding and learning. Through it all, she stood by me—pushing me to own my worth, refine my craft, and keep going when things got tough. Running a small business takes a lot of work, and I hope on those long days, every small business owner has someone they can come home to for love and support. I wouldn’t have made it this far without that.
